Desperate Flight . Don't look back -- something might be gaining on you. . He heard the scream of utter terror behind him, and knew that the beast had gotten McNamara. Now it was just him, one man left alive from their entire squad. He didn't turn to look, that scream said all he needed to know. All he could do was try to slog faster through this stinking muck. It sucked at his boots, holding him down like those nightmares where you can only run in slow motion. Only now the nightmare was real. "Don't stop! Save yourself!" McNamara shouted, before his voice was cut off with a horrible wet ripping sound. Had McNamara seen that he didn't hesitate, didn't so much as flick a quick glance back over his shoulder? Of course it was hopeless, they knew that. How many of their buddies had they already left behind in this panicked retreat? Maybe it was aimed at salving his conscience a bit, should he by some miracle escape the beast and live to bear a survivor's guilt. McNamara was the type to do just that. He'd lost his weapon, much good it did against that monster anyway. It was just ballast weighing him down when the squad broke and ran. Still, it might be better to die facing the thing with gun blazing like the lieutenant, than running in terror. A tentacle tip flicked over his head. He knew it was over. But still he kept trying to run.
