Why?
Sony Building, New York . micro scale skyscraper . Micro scale model of Philip Johnson's classic midtown Manhattan skyscraper. The model is approximately 1/650 scale (based on it's heigth) - similar to my other skyscrapers. I orginally constructed this model in 2002 using light gray, as tan was not available for many of the parts I needed. In 2008 I went back and completely redesigned it and added many new details. Astute observers will note I have taken some liberties with the layout of the various windows - a consequence of the model's odd numbered 9x5 stud footprint. Despite it's outwardly simple appearance, there are a lot of "stud not on top" techniques used in this model. Packing everything into such a small space was a real challenge. Back of the tower showing the glass topped atrium. Front of the tower showing the arched main entrance with a large circular window above. Top of the tower. The crown's style has often been compared to that of a Thomas Chippendale cabinet. The semi-circular opening is a bit larger scalewise than in the real building. Some more of the street level detailing.
