Spring Driven Working Handguns in Scale 1:10 . Family of spring-driven working small arms in scale 1:10 . *Visit my Lego helicopters blog also 1.Introduction Introduction of Bionicle parts in Lego made possible to build mighty warriors in scales ranging from 1:10 to 1:5. However these mighty warriors usually have totally fake, non-working weapons, which makes them pretty ridiculous (although they can kill by laugh also…). On the other hand, we can see wide range of nicely detailed working handgun MOCs in scale 1:1 to 1:2, but they are rarely attempted in smaller scale. We try to fill this gap creating SideSpringer family of spring-driven working small arms in scale 1:10. 2.Technical details The key for solution is part “Corrugated pipe 2M”, which can act as weaker type of ABS spring. Alternatively, we can get stronger steel spring disassembling part “Shock absorber extra hard”. Both parts are 2 studs (16mm) long with 1 stud (8mm) diameter, compressible around 1.5studs (12mm). However mechanical force of steel spring is too strong for technic parts, and requires gluing them together to prevent falling apart during shooting. As Lego parts are huge compared to the size of a handgun in scale 1:10, we have to fix springs in a very compact way. The solution is provided by part “Technic cross axle 4M/8M with end stop”, which acts as a pullrod sliding in part “Beam 2×1 with cross and hole” compressing springs. Moreover its rotation can hook a catch, holding springs in compressed position. In shooting cycle, one can pull back the rod against the force of spring by the yellow colored grip, then rotate it 45 degrees upward to lock it. Magazine/belt is advanced manually, to place next projectile in line with barrel. Then, downward rotation of yellow grip will unlock spring, which press a separate pushrod in the magazine/belt and barrel at high speed, launching the projectile. Spring trail of different sized weapons varies between 12 and 24mm. Girder and grip of most weapons are made from part “Function element male”. For the sake of compactness, its axis is parallel with both axis of barrel and axis of spring pullrod, ant they are spaced in a 1 stud-equal sided triangle. Designing magazines and belt feed systems, the main problem was that as long as we tried to be proportional to real projectile sizes in scale 1:10, there were no such a small parts in Lego. So, the pistol and assault rifle can use non-Lego projectiles only. The heavy machine gun theoretically could use part “Screwdriver” as projectile, but only after reducing its diameter because its strong friction. The only fully Lego-compatible solution is the grenade launcher, where projectiles made of part “Technic cross axle 2M” can move in its barrel with reasonably small friction. All magazines and belts are advanced manually, however heavy machine gun and grenade launcher have moving belt locking teeth. Most weapons have working sight, utilizing part “Shaft 3M 3.2mm” in transparent color. Grips and butt stocks of all weapons are designed to be compatible with Bionicle part “Hand 3×2×3 studs ball joint”. Flame thrower is modeled with flexi tube connecting to backpack unit containing double Napalm tanks, double Nitrogen (N2) displacer gas pressure tanks, double pressure valves and gauges. Projectile of rocket propelled grenade (RPG) launcher has AP warhead with shaped charge and rocket nozzle. Launcher tube was formed from parts “Flat tile 1×8 studs”. 3.Future development In future development, we will try to solve automatic belt advancing at machine gun and grenade launcher, with the help of a ratchet mechanism and rotating movement of the spring pullrod when locking/unlocking spring catches.
