50 years of Doctor Who – 02. Gridlock . This year, the popular BBC television series ‘Doctor Who’ celebrates its 50th anniversary. To celebrate this year’s event, I’d like to build and upload 11 small Doctor Who MOCs – the last and biggest one in November this year. . This creation is based on season 3, episode 3, where the Doctor and Martha travel to New New York in the far future, where they discover the remainder of humanity on the planet live in perpetual gridlock within the Motorway, an underground highway system.

For those of you who are interested … *cricket* … here is a brief insight how I created this picture.
01 & 02: Sunday morning, my living room. The first step was to test how much distance I’d need to create a convincing depth for the picture. The space occupied by my table was enough (125 x 125 cm, about 4 x 4 ft.).
03 & 04: I removed the table and created a net pattern with crepe tape.
05: After that I took over 200 photos (these are only a few of them), placing the hovercar in one field after the other. There were a little over 100 fields for each layer.
06: After the second layer, I realized that the whole effort was almost completely unnecessary. All I needed were about 3 – 4 rows of cars; the rest of them wouldn’t be visible in the final picture anyway.
07 & 08: I started again, this time, right in front of the camera. After taking one photo, I added it directly to a psd-file to see, if the position of the car is okay and how many more I’d have to take in that row.
09: For the hovercars over the eye level, I needed some LEGO Technic help.
10: And finally, the Doctor. The rest was digital work
11: About 12 hours of digital work. First, I had to knock out the background of each photo in the psd-file. After that, a rough colour, contrast and brightness correction followed.
12: Now I had to create separate layers for all the lights and lamps, because the cars were too bright, but the lights were perfect. After isolating the lights, I could continue with the fine colour and brightness correction. I also added the yellow smog clouds.
For the final poster image, I cropped about half of the picture. It was a pity, but necessary to focus on the Doctor. That is the reason why the cars in the second and third row on the left side of the photo are still too bright. There was no need to correct them anymore.
