MO R3: Stormbringer vs. Paul Romano: Brave New World . . 2012 MocOlympics My opponent Stormbringer’s amazing entry. Category: The Future is Now O wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in't. -Shakespear’s The Tempest In the year 2100, the world has changed…and not for the better. The advancement of genetic/cybernetic engineering, the legalization of drugs, and the militarization of the world’s police forces have turned the Northeast’s sprawling cities into hell-holes where only the very brave or the very rich survive… A cybernetically enhanced bounty hunter prepares to take out his mark. The proliferation of nano-technology and robotic implants has turned some humans into bizarre machine-man hybrids. A police Brawler idles as the rain begins to fall. Brutally effective at crushing opposition to government programs, Brawlers can accelerate to 100 mph in under 3.5 seconds. They can carry a squad of shock-troopers into the nastiest slums. Due to excess inflation, paper money is now merely litter… A hybrid bouncer stands at the door to a club, electronically scanning all those who enter with his cybernetic eyes. If the person's face does not match the bouncer’s data roster of allowed guests, a taser baton is quickly called into action. The FunHouse, a late-night club featuring the latest crank-music, vibro-dance floors, and strong alcoholic beverages. The FunHouse attracts the upper elite of the city, including masked businessmen and freakishly bizarre hipsters. They throng to clubs such as these to frivolously dance and drink away their nights, while across the street vagrants fight for scraps of food. Hipsters, sporting the latest “fashion implants” get down on a vibro-dance floor. Rich and carefree, they spend money like water, living only for the moment. 6 amplifiers blast a combination of crank-music and retro-dubstep onto the clubgoers. A masked guest coolly sips a drink, while a garish painting hangs behind him. Graffiti artwork is making a comeback in the year 2100, despite being out of style for the past 50 years. A businessman calmly scans the room for an attractive female to take home for the night. Glow-in-the dark decals enhance the FunHouses party-like atmosphere. The twin vibro-floors pulsate and throb to the beat of the music. A small Druggery sits across the street from the FunHouse. Ever since marijuana, cocaine, meth, heroine, and several other drugs were legalized in 2076, Druggeries have done booming business; powerful political backers and corporations brutally crush any opposition to their trade. This Druggery sports fake marijuana leaves and a brilliant red color to attract potential customers. Inside, a burnt-out junkie purchases some meth. The cybernetically enhanced shop owner keeps a steady hand on his plasma rifle, while a corner camera records the transaction. Drug dealing is dangerous, but highly profitable… Outside, a pair of addicts waste away. Above them, an awning advertises the different drugs inside. A giant heroin needle decoration draws in the crowds… A one-armed beggar sits in the rain. After the collapse of Social Security and medicare in the early 2000s, most of the elderly population was forced onto the streets. The government has been slow to react, citing the “ expendability” and “low importance” of the older generation. A police operation is in progress in the abandoned building next door. Shock-troopers with holographic helmets enter the broken down building. A shock-trooper shoots down a back-street physician called “a grifter” (grafter/ripper). Highly illegal, grifters use stolen technology to build private robots for high-paying customers. The money is good, but most grifters never get to spend it: if the government doesn’t nail them, they’re own clients will. The grifter’s client hurriedly escapes out of a back alley on his duo-bike, crashing through a light post on his way out. He has no intention of running into the trigger-happy officers. The duo-bike, designed by yours truly with the help of my lil’ brother. The Brawler, co-engineered with my little brother. With the SNOT road removed, the entire creation can be fitted in different ways for more play options, all thanks to some handy Technic pins in the base. Play ability is always an important part of my creations: if ya can’t have fun with it, what good is it ;P My goal with this category was to build a world where cybernetic technology and drugs were on the rise. I was heavily influenced by media such as Blade Runner, Deus Ex: Revolutions, the Metal Gear series, and the book Brave New World. This creation was a nightmare to design, build, and photograph; I wish I could have worked on the concept longer. But alas, a brutal 40 hour work-week and my almost-acceptance of a sketchy manager position did not help in the least (note to all youngsters who are getting into retail: if the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is). I think Stormbringer got me on this one, but if this is my last round, I’m proud to have gotten this far in my first MocOlympics. Props to the always-excellent Stormbringer for being a great opponent, and as always, let the best MOC win!
