Why?
Nui-Ao: Rahi of Iron . My contribution to the Entry Round of the 2012 Periodic Bionicle Contest & built from exactly 59 pieces... Boy that was close! . Don't miss the other pix after the link and the background info! Link to the contest: ContestGroupHome The Important Background Information: Nui-Ao are Rahi that resemble Samurai Beetles. They are found in the Iron mines on Nippon Magna located near the venerated mountain Fuji Nui, so named because the inhabitants believe the mountain is alive. Nui-Ao feed on the oxides of Iron, commonly known as rusts, found near the upper levels of the mines. They are able to digest and decompose rusts using the resultant Oxygen for energy. After the digestion/decomposition process, the scat the beetles leave behind is pure Iron! It is this scat that is ‘mined’ by the inhabitants. Blue Nui-Ao Rahi have a special ability that allows them to retain some of the Iron in their body and this Iron enters a cyanometalobiochemical pathway and is converted to the Iron-hexacyanoferrate dye called Prussianui Blue. This Prussianui Blue dye complex is what gives blue samurai beetles their exquisite color.
