The Flying Dutchman is a galleon with two gun decks accommodating 38 cannons (20+18). The weather deck has various spots suitable for additional smaller guns. In the movie (Dead Man's Chest and At World's End) the Flying Dutchman has a total of 52 cannons and on top of that the famous triple barreled chaser guns in the bow. It is suspected that the Dutchman has stern chasers as well but there's no visual material to support.
If you are not familiar with the Flying Dutchman you're looking at a strange ship I assume. The main thing you should know about the Dutchman is that she's a ghostship, haunted by the curse of her captain.

Now some pictures, with a total length of 129 studs (slightly more than a meter) it was not easy to get a clean background.
Important aspect: this is a waterline model which means only that part of the ship is built which is not submerged (under normal conditions). Because of that this ship doesn't feature a hold but the advantage is that it's a great set for display as it can be placed directly on a blue surface.
The max width is 26 studs and can be measured at the waterline near the forecastle.
I must say that she looks less bulky in the pictures than she does in real. She may look narrow to you while she isn't really.
Following is a picture of the real thing, the floating barge I based most of my design on, I heard it was dismantled a while ago, people could visit the ship at Castaway Cay as part of a Disney cruise. I would have loved to see it for real...

The port side of the ship is open to view the interior. Interesting fact; the real ship they used for the movies was also open at the port side.
The stern is probably the most detailed section, while the decorations don't match those in the movie they do add to the typical appearance of the legendary ship .
Yet it is not very faithful to the movie, I kind of gave it my own interpretation.
There used to be more on it though, I was short on dk green vine pieces for my cannon ports so I took some off the stern. As soon as I get more of them I'll recover the stern to its former glory.
Now time for some onboard pictures:

Entrance to the cabin, on a historically accurate ship the steering mechanism should be located behind those doors and a gap/window between them. There would not be a steering wheel but a long pole connecting to the tiller (which is the extension of the rudder inside the ship), the so called whipstaff.

I made two longboats though they can't be seen in the movies (except for the one W. Turner escapes in). Even the crew doesn't use them, they rather swim to land. I haven't been able to spot their location when stored on the ship, I assumed the waist was the most logical place (allthough they aren't there in the movie).
Time for the interior, the port side of the ship is open, one can easely view the interior that way. The main reason was to save parts though. Interesting fact: the real flying dutchman barge has this side also open and when you think about it, there's not a single scene in the movies where the port side of the ship is clearly visible so on that matter it's actually even more accurate to leave it open :P.

This deck also gives access to the lower galleries which lead to the lower balcony.
A ship with double galleries is very uncommon, it's not made up though, the Dutchman was inspired by the Vasa which was a Swedish warship from around the early 17th century, The only known ship to have this uncommon characteristic.

There's a total of 3 stairs on the upper gun deck.

Good old Wyvern, he should actually be on the upper gun deck but there was more place here.
Since it's fundamentally impossible to build an accurate replica of the Flying Dutchman *(see below) I figured I could allow myself some more flexibility in the design.

It's difficult to say how many pieces are in this ship, It weights 4,2 kg and is over 1 meter long.
It's difficult to say how long I worked on this, I played with the Idea of building a new Flying Dutchman since about 1 year ago.
This is my biggest ship so far, it is considerabely larger than my previous biggest ship (the Black Pearl) and it will probably remain the biggest as I don't intend to make any big ships soon. One day perhaps, a Ship-of-the-line, it's a dream.
This was it, I hope this time my permanent shelf will live up to its name.
I became a real geek considering POTC movies, I watched them, no I studied them several times to look for details I might have overseen. I'm pretty much the Flying Dutchman expert now :P
An observant viewer saw that the ship is not yet completed, at this moment I do not have the pieces to finish the ship but I'm planning to do so later.
Yet to do (in order of priority) :
Rebuild upper masts (more gray, less tan)
Add yards to all masts
build the broken bowsprit
Make sails and complete the rigging
Finish the port side (with opening features): ABANDONED, the port side will remain open for viewing the interior.
Major change in the upper gun deck cannon ports (those aren't supposed to be demonic faces, I was a bit overzealous here)
Add official minifigures

*There are several scenes in the movie that contradicts certain locations and interiors in the Flying Dutchman, this made it impossible to make a fully faithfull replica. I decided to go for the more realistic way which resulted in the nicer decks but also reduced the captain's quarter in size, in the movie it has the height of two decks.
