Joe Pineapples bust . "According to Joe Pineapples, the best sniper in the galaxy is Joe Pineapples". . Ok, so I'm stoked that I've re-discovered the weekly British sci-fi comic 2000AD, an absolute favourite from my teenage years. You English or Australian readers might recognise 2000AD, (the publication of Tharg the Mighty!) but I think the comic is almost unknown in the US. Anyway, it's home to Judge Dredd and many other very awesome weird and wonderful characters and groups, one of which, the A.B.C. (Atomic Bacterial Chemical) Warriors, was my favourite. A ragtag band of mercenary robots roaming the galaxy in search of war, money, fame and cheap beer (what more could you ask for in a comic?!) This sculpture of Joe Pineapples, the group's cross-dressing, megalomaniacal sharp-shooting sniper is a tribute to the ABC Warriors and the imagination within the pages of 2000AD, which stirred my teenage imagination no end.
I started with building the face and then rest of the head as that was going to be the trickiest, getting the likeness right. Luckily, Joe has exaggerated tough-guy chiseled features which made it fairly easy.
The next harders part was getting his black leather jacket with it's upturned colour to look right, sitting over the top of his blue metallic chest muscles. My first atempt was to try curving plates:
which gave a nice expanding curve but it didn't allow for space for his neck and shoulders, so I switched to using hinge bricks sideways to give the curve. It worked better as I could cut out space for the back of his neck but I would've liked more hinges; I ran out and it does look a little bit stiff. Still I'm happy with the end result:
He looks much better in real life; our stereoscopic vision enables us to see small changes in agnles and how they relate to the overall structure but photograps tend to flatten and dull the image, like looking at a 3D object with one eye shut, so these pictures don't do it justice. I've photoshopped the 4x4 dishes he has for ears from bley to blue as apparently, blue dishes are very rare, only appearing in 3 Lego sets ever. I was too lazy to fix all of the pics.
Some WIP shots:
Thanks for looking guys. I hope everyone had a great Xmas and is fired up for heaps of Lego building in 2012!!
