M39A3 Athena Reconnaissance Vehicle . Hover reconnaissance vehicle. . This build fleshes out some of the 'good guys' from my Phase Lines theme. I wanted to create a fast reconnaissance & surveillance vehicle to complement the Cerberus SBT. The overall concept is based on the LAV Coyote of Canadian Forces. THE BUILD This build began with failure. I started from the rear surveillance operator's compartment and quickly over scaled it in an attempt to fit all sorts of cool gizmos. Take two sacrificed a lot of internal detail for scale. The hull was very submarine-like when complete and is two halves with studs going in opposite directions joined by 1/2 technic pins. The armour plate along the side hides the seam. The turret turntable sits on a plug of 2x2 bricks to hold it in place as the studs also face opposite directions in that part. While the hull is pretty solid and almost kid-proof, the turret wobbles. BACKSTORY The Athena operates at the leading edge of a CARA Regiment. Far ahead of the following SBTs, but within range of artillery and air-support, the Athena troop consists of eight vehicles organized into three patrols of two-vehicles with the last two vehicles, the troop leader and his wingman, trailing behind. Each vehicle is equipped with a Polaris UAV that move ahead and fill the gaps between patrols so that a large frontage is covered and under surveillance as the Regiment advances. The sensor suite is the same as the Cerberus with the addition of a telescoping millimeter-wave radar array on the back deck of the vehicle. This allows the vehicle to stay concealed behind terrain features and scan large distances undetected. Like the Cerberus, stealth technology is employed to ensure mission survival. The Athena also has a jamming suite, although not as powerful or as long-range as the Argus. All surveillance equipment is operated by the surveillance operator in the rear of the vehicle, often referred to as the Guy In Back or GIB. The remaining three crewmen of driver, gunner and crew-commander are in the small fighting compartment to the front with a two-man turret housing the gunner/commander. Utilizing the latest tier of polarity drive and light armour, the Athena is extremely fast for its size and able to keep pace with the ram-jet powered M61 chassis used by the rest of the Regiment vehicles. Its best defence is stealth and speed, only armed with a coaxial heavy machinegun and auto-cannon capable of destroying similar thin-skinned vehicles. Example represented is from 2 Troop, C Squadron, Australian Hussars, 4th Division INDOCOR, Australian Expeditionary Force - Jinan during the Signet War. Polaris UAV launch bay. Surveillance Operator's office (Guy in Back - GIB) Sensor mast. RASCAS sentry droid for point defence. Non-UAS regulation headwear. "Oi, mate!" Better resolution pics on my Flickr account.
