Big Red Christmas Top . . Merry Christmas, MOCpages! My last-second entry has been done for a week or so, but travelling and general holiday craziness did their usual job on me. This is an entry for Yuri Fassio's Spinning Top Contest, in the Christmas category. At 212 pieces, this is one massive top. Although it looks like a giant ornament, I wouldn't recommend hanging it on your tree. Especially if it's a wiltering Douglas fir, like mine. This baby would probably collapse my tree. I was overjoyed to finally find a use for the 100 or so red 4x4 curved plates I acquired two years ago. Here is the required photo, showing the top spinning. It would spin a lot better if it were lighter, and if it didn't require internal friction to hold together. I managed to get a few shots of it spinning, although the thing is always trying to tear itself apart. Four rubber bands on the outside fight outward pressure from the plates and the wheels (see next picture). I spent a while trying to get a system of rubber bands inside. Almost at the point of giving up, I remembered my new wheels from an early Christmas present. Success! Thanks to Yuri for hosting the contest! Merry Christmas to all, and to all a great Christmas morning!
