Shadow IV . Galleon (indiaman) . Number four of a not yet determined amount of shadow ships,
the idea behind these 'Shadow's is that each newer version becomes more accurate to the mythic Black Pearl, eventually the last version will be named 'the Black Pearl'
Shadow I
Shadow II
Shadow III
Shadow IV
when I made this I thought I came pretty close to the mytic ship from Pirates of the Caribbean,
but there where so many things I wanted to change already and that would require the removal of some nice parts of this version so I decided to post this ship first, then make the changes or make a completely new, more accurate ship
regular ship hulls (the premade ones by TLC) are actually not suited to make an accurate replica of the Black Pearl (or the Flying Dutchman) but I don't have enough of the right parts to make costum hulls so I'll better stick to my alternate ship for now,
eventually I'll have to change to costum hulls...
Anyway, I like this ship, it is different from my others, I used the same technique I used on the Flying Dutchman to expand the hulls. But by reducing the height I was able to make the widest section the upper deck, unlike the Dutchman which has a smaller deck.
Because of that this ship has only 2 decks instead of 3.
The cabin turned out nicely, I used to make these very high cabins.
transparant cone pieces create a nice effect, it's something you should try out, the reflection of light in the evening makes the ship look spooky (that might be because you can hardly see the rest of the ship in the dark :p)
Another detail you might have noticed would be the oars coming out of the sides of the ship,
I preserved holes next to the gunports (though I think the Black Pearl has them under the gunports).
I'm considering using other techniques to get a nice curved shape, my techniques can make a ship look less blocky particulary in front or rear perspective but they are less useful when making longer ships.
The center parts of my ships often look very linear. For the perfect example of a great shape I refer to the Spanish Galleon, probably one of the best in its kind.
I think such techniques harshly reduce playablity though, I don't actually play with my lego anymore but still...
The idol, it needs wings, a hairpiece and a bird in order to ressemble the Pearl's idol but I can't find fitting parts.
As I said this ship is quite playable, a part of the upperdeck can be removed to get a better view of the gun deck,
I forgot to place a hatch over the hole in the middle, I ran out of midsections so I had to make a costum one (that's how the hole was created).
The cabin is much wider than previous ships, very spacy. The piano is evident ofcourse.
Btw, that bottle holds apple juice, I don't drink alcoholic stuff :P
I'm very satisfied with the entrance of the cabin, I think I'll make the stairs one studd thinner on my next version though,
that would allow me to add more detail on the entrance doors.
Anyway, I hope you like it,
Let's see, there will be atleast a Shadow V before I can post the Black Pearl, Black sails and accurate cabin/stern are the most obvious requirements for the next version, maybe I'll try brick-built hulls as well...
If I ever manage to make a more accurate replica of the Black Pearl I might make the Mealstrom battle since I also have a Flying Dutchman resting on my shelf...Though it requires more than just those ships to do that
However, first you can expect the start of my very first series, I plan to post in two weeks,
See ya later
