An unlikely rescue TWO - A ww2 Romance story cont... . We left our unlikely couple in an Ardennes Street fleeing the German Panzer Assualt during the Battle of the Bulge, in part 1. -------------------------- -------------------------- Completely surrounded by his own countrymen, Wolfgang anxious to herald his female passenger to safety drives for the cover of nearby Bastogne. The drive has been long and frought with danger but has allowed the German soldier to enjoy an interesting conversation with his passenger, Bridgette Leraux, whom he discovers is possessed of witful humor and wonderfully idealistic opinions. . The speech between Bridgette and Wolfgang should be in French, I apoligise as I do not read or write French myself and so must resort to my own Language of English. 'Bridgette,' announced a weary Wolfgang, 'We are on the outskirts of Bastogne, I see a house on that hill so we will just drive around this corner and we can ask if they will take you-' Wolfgang hit the breaks and fumbled with the reverse gear but it was too late. He had driven straight in front of a Sherman Tank. The American Engine of destruction quickly fired a warning shot over his head and fearing for the saftey of his passenger the German so tired of war simply hopped out of his Truck and raised his arms, ready to die. Bridgette knew she was saved. An American Tank! She knew she should be jubilant but seeing Wolfgang head out towards the hulking steel beast of the Sherman Tank, dropping his gun and raising his hands, she felt saddenned.---------------- She knew well what would happen, he would either be shot on the spot or shufflled to POW camp where he would likely starve to death. The man had resued her, and from her short time with him, she knew the History teacher was not a cruel man, just on the wrong side. 'No, no don't shoot!' she screamed, running out protectively in front the defeated man, knowing full well that any French witnessess might brand her a calloborator and sue for her to be shot for treason. BUt she didn't care.-------------------------- 'No don't shoot him,' pleaded Biridgette of the Sherman Tank Gunner. 'Why the hell not?' retorted the angry Gunnery Seragent MArk Rockford, 'These Krauts have surrounded us! We are being pushed back everywhere. Get out of the way mam, and let me do my job.' Wolfgang felt a lump in his throat. Bridgette had just jumped in between him and certain death. The enormity of her act struck him breathless. No one other than his mother had ever done anything like that for him before in his life. The American sounded angry and he could not bear the notion of the wonderful French woman being harmed on his account. Seeing a narrow fissure to the right of him, Wolfgamg figured the best way to remedy the situation was to make a run for the heavily wooded Bastogne, not far below. 'Merci Briggette,' he offered before making a run for it. The gunnery Sgt spat his curse and Bridgette turned around in surprise to see her rescuer run for his life. She chased him momentarily imagining that she should run with him. She stood at the mouth of the pass instead and waved goodbye, a tear escaping her eye. Would she ever see him again? P.S.
