HVEI-8 'Wolfhound'
A point defence interceptor, purpose designed for speed and devastating firepower.
About this creation
The HVEI-8 is a short range (by cosmic standards) interceptor intended to hunt and destroy large bomber spacecraft and long-distance missiles.

It is lightly armed by many standards, mounting only six semi-homing DX-12 missiles, with the deluxe fragmentation warhead. Those missiles are short-range, with a maximum effective distance of only 800 kilometres.

The exodyne itself has a maximum engine power of 5,200,000 kilograms of thrust, although velocities like that wear it out very rapidly and the pilot suffers intense strain, despite the inertial dampeners.
The use of maximum thrust is reserved for emergency situations only, and the pilot must disable many safety interlocks to reach it.
In those rare events where the dampeners fail at such speeds, the pilot is usually converted into a flat paste along with most of the more sensitive cockpit components.

The craft is very effective at it's assigned roles, being more than capable of destroying a large cargo freighter, equipped with military grade armour plating, at a range of four hundred klicks.
Due to the nature of the propellants used in the missiles, they reach maximum effectiveness at a range of 400,000 metres.
After that range is reached, the missiles continue to accelerate, but the fuel, being reduced, is less likely to improve the power of the explosion.
Needless to say, a lack of fuel also removes all manuevering ability, rendering the weapon useless.
Safety mechanisms disable the warhead after burnout.

However, the pilot has a number of special firing modes available to him: he can fire with the thrust governing systems disabled, greatly reducing range but increasing the impact force on a target and increasing the probability of a kill, he can disable the seeker head, resulting in a slightly longer range, he can set the warhead to either the default impact detonation or proximity detonation for anti-fighter roles.

The fragmenting warhead is very effective against spacecraft, almost guaranteeing crippling damage if aimed correctly.

The engines of the Wolfhound are effective but vulnerable, easily damaged and disabled.
They are, however, easily repaired, making them quite popular among the maintainance folk.
They are very powerful for fighter powerplants, but they burn up their fuel supply rather rapidly; the craft can outrun and destroy the fastest known coalition intruder spacecraft moving away at a distance of 6000 kilometres, but would be incapable of movement afterwards.

The Wolfhound has a maintainable cruising speed of 10 km/s, which allows it to potentially maintain a station at any of a billion different points almost indefinitely, assuming a pilot without need of waste disposal or nourishment.

It is a rather simple and easily repaired design, but is also quite cramped.

It is capable of low level close air support for ground forces, but runs out of ammunition rapidly, being designed for immense firepower over an incredibly short period of time.
It is far more effective as a battlefield scout, as the onboard microfusion reactor is capable of keeping it at a tolerable speed for an immense time.
Fuel is not an issue in such circumstances, as at the speeds neccessary to remain airborne the onboard fuel supply would last for centuries.

It is unusually small for an exofighter, but it's size makes it difficult to detect, a useful ability for an interceptor.

The centre of gravity of the HVEI-8 is slightly beneath the midsection, meaning that a Wolfhound can flip about on its axis very rapidly, presenting an unpleasant surprise to ususpecting pursuers.

Excepting its nasty handling characteristics at extreme low altitude, to be precise its desire to smash its nose into the ground, the HVEI-8 is easy to control for an exodyne.

Like all craft, it can be destroyed or disabled.

Unlike most, the cockpit assembly can be detached, acting as a lifepod of sorts.
This is only of use in low gravity environments, thanks to the weak engines on the pod, but is part of the docking procedure for Wolfhounds.

In an atmosphere, the craft can land. However, it has no traditional landing gear, and is thus launched as a 'tailsitter'. It can also be launched with a trolley/sled device, but to land it must come down carefully, with due use of vectored thrust and the reduced weight resulting from disposing of the payload.
It can land as a tailsitter, but such a landing is extremely difficult.

Quoting Joshua Benjamin Great looking ship! Its nice how you went to all the effort to make up all that technical babble. (btw, you may not remember this but you once told me to make my army less starwarsy. Well I just did that!)
Well I had to put something there, didn't I? It's not much trouble, though. I just stole some info from various sources and reworded it, swapped a few digits and poof. But yes, I remember mentioning a redesign of the basic infantry of your faction, and I think it should be vastly improved now.

Spacecraft are not my field of true expertise. I have the 'Valke', you may be able to dig up some pics on classic space but I will not be using it as a contest entry.

Nice one. It's small, fast, and has a (insert insulting word here)-load of missiles. What more could anyone ask for?
