As far as SHIP building advice goes, I might quickly say this: use technic parts for the substructure (if done right, they're stronger and lighter than regular brick constructs), plan to spend a good bit on Bricklink orders, and finally, have patience to see it through to the end. Many builders start big projects but fail to finish when they discover how time-consuming and expensive the project becomes.
