Estuary Stronghold: Build Journal #1
About this creation
December 31st, 2008: This is the beginning of my biggest MOC to date. A tribute build to Erik Brok and his Estuary Stronghold. This is one of my favorite MOC's of all time and basically got me back into building about a year ago. Eriks webpage is at: www.erikbrok.com where the original (main pic) can be seen in full details.

Recently I moved into a new room in the house as the family grows. Here's a shot of the new digs. Luckily, I still have an extra room for this. The lego collection continues to grow (about 37,000 pieces now)

So far I'm still in planning mode. Basically laying out the Burps to size up this beast. I'm expecting this to take me about 4-6 months to complete. Maybe longer as I want to get it right. I'm going to guess that I'll use 20,000 pieces in the construction.

One of the features will be an extensive use of mottled walls. Here are a couple examples I'm practicing with.

Erik used Wall Panels in his build. I'm not planning on using any of those pieces. The build won't be identical, just similar. Its going to be more interpretive with modern techniques.

These are some semi-custom minifigs. Neat I guess Right? I'm just trying out the new MOCpages here. It seems a bit slow loading pages. Sean says its because of the ads. I say its annoying, although the new features are nice. Can't say its worth it until the pages speed up.

And unrelated to this all is a mini-dino. Roar!

I'm expecting to post at the end of each month until this is finished. See you then.

Looks good so far. A great idea to pay homage to Erik as he was an awesome builder and a great friend of the LEGO community. I like the 'mottled wall' ideas you are proposing and I might have to borrow those. :-) Looking forward to following your progress.

You and Kelso sure know how to drive us crazy with anticipation. Is it done yet? How about now?

I really envy people like you and Kelso (but don't tell him that) that can actually take the time to make something this big. My stuff always starts with the best intentions but then my ADHD gets a hold of me and I can't seem to keep my focus for very... HEY, is that carmel popcorn? be right back... (lookin' forward to it) ~ Chris.

Now THIS is a cool MOC to rebuild in your own rendition, Estuary Stronghold has always been in my list of top 5 MOCs! I can't wait to see the finished product, I know you will do a great job!

Say, Eggy...can we start a petition to the LEGO Group to come up with a 1 x 1 brick that's got angled sides to function like those 1 x 1 rounds? God, I'd kill for a brick like that!!!!

It's looking good so far, Professor! But, come on, you can go bigger that that! That's just a mid sized castle. Think big. Go out about 5 studs in each direction. :P It does look like a good build. The broken walls also look excellent. Cant wait to see the finished product.

Ha, you had me fooled there for a moment! Although, I did know the colossal build pictured in the main photo wasn't quite eggplant-ish enough to have been built by you. Anyway, I can't wait to see the final product!

Looks like a good start. I can't imagine working on something that long. The longer the timeline the less likely that I might finish it. I like the little dino guy. The mottled walls sure can add to the look of the place. 37K. Hey, starting to get a good size chunk of junk in the trunk, huh. see ya. garth
