second working machine gun / assault rifle with grenade launcher and scope
About this creation
This is a recent remake of the old "machine gun". It fires further and has many other additions that make it superior to the original. This includes:
- The colour scheme
- Grenade Launcher
- Scope
- Fire-by-wire
- Accuracy, range and power, due to advanced bearing system (yeah it sounds cool doesnt it)
THE GEAR BEARING |
The main improvement is the aforementioned bearing system. This allows the bearings for the high-speed final accelerator even more freedom without compromising reliability. It uses the flexibility of the Lego plastic to give suspension in the "Y" axis, single blocks to hold it straight but self-aligning in the "X" axis and endstops to keep it in its "Z" axis boundaries. The freedom increases the accuracy of the alignment between the bearings and reduces vibration, allowing the gear to spin at higher speeds than before, giving the bullets more momentum.
THE MAGAZINE |
The bullets are the same racked teeth commonly found in the steering mechanisms of vehicles, and the magazines are more streamlined than the originals. The only surface object on them is the bullet locking mechanism at the top, which connects with the cocking handle when the magazine is clipped in. I built this mechanism for fun.. it requires four actions to load a magazine; put the mag in, clip it to the cocking handle, pull the cocking handle and put the magazine fully down. The magazine can be removed just by pulling it out. The spring-loaded cocking handle ensures that the locking mechanism moves back over the end of the mag to stop any remaining bullets from falling out.
THE GRENADES |
Grenades can be quite dense because the launcher is powerful enough to throw them quite a distance (4+ metres). The grenade launcher is a simple affair consisting of two bands drawn back on a bar, latched by a coathanger-shaped piece and fired by lifting this with the lever.
THE SCOPE & FIRE-BY-WIRE |
The scope is just for show. It has all the parts excluding an actual lense. The RCX brick controls the "loader" motor, recieving signals from a touch sensor as a trigger and another as a fire select. It is programmed to display the fire mode as a number. The modes are: single shot, three-round burst, full auto and a safety (although since the gun requires four buttons to be pressed before being ready to fire, this last one seems pointless!).
Enjoy!

Ammo; the 1x4 toothed racks from lego steering. The ammo boxes are simply tubes with a row of flats inside to let the ammo slide. The stops on the end can be seen more clearly if you view the full size pic.

The other side. I tried to make it all white since that was the largest number of spare 'flats' available at the time.

The bearings. The yellow bar stops them from falling down (I called this the "Z" axis in my description)

Here you can see the black upper tensioners (that stop it from jumping out too far when a bullet passes through ("Y" axis)), and the grey (lifted off) end stop for the "X" axis.

The grenade mag can clip onto the gun just behind the RCX.

Overview with the stock. It's removable, not collapsible.

I moved this here, in case it was putting peeps off or something... not happy with the way people rate this MOC with a one then don't review it!

The pics are in a weird order... here's the upper tensioners removed (the hinged bar on the right locks them down when they are in place).
