Ferrari Monza Roadster
Just a few days ago, my buddy Sven uploaded his “F585 Superitalia” with its flipping hard top. Now time has come for mine (Jens)… the “Monza Roadster”. It is my competitor for Andy Lamborghini’s working convertible contest.
About this creation
Buongiorno a tutti!

At this years Autosalon in Paris in early October (and simultaniously at the Ferrari Racing Days at Germanys Nurburgring) the Italian make with the Prancing Horse presents its new “California”. For the first time, Ferrari mounted a 4.3 liter V-8 in front – capable of more than 450 bhp. Other firsts are direct injection and a dual clutch transmission.

The flashiest eye-catcher is a folding metal roof, which can be seen here . It takes just 15 seconds to fully automatically store the roof in the trunk. The lucky owner will get the maximum driving pleasure, whenever & wherever. Cruising “topless” at the beach or a trip into the mountains – the California is so roomy that (thanks to its folding rear bench) it can even accommodate skis or snowboards.

With my OC (MOC) I tried to copy some of the innovative ideas of the “California” into a LEGO® Ferrari. However, it has no folding rear bench…it has no rear bench at all! Neither a steering ;-). But as you will see in the following pics, I really got a folding hard top in there. In a comment on Sven’s “Superitalia” Ape Fight asked if we had a try at a Volvo C-70 style hard top. Well, this one cost some nerve for sure!

OK, take your time, there are MANY pics to discover.

360 degrees of a pure roadster…

I copied some ideas of the “California”, like the big grille….

…or the the stacked exhaust pipes.

Unfortunately the trunk space isn’t THAT big when the roof is stored…

…but nevermind as this is easily compensated by many shelves: in the door lining…

… an opening glove box…

…and sliding seats to allow easy access to the small rack. The leathery interior comes with an potional carbon fiber trim.

The center console is dominated by an 8’’ LCD-screen. You can choose between a variety of entertainment functions or satellite navigation. Digital instruments provide best liability & readability – and thus safety!

On a high-performance sportscar as the “Monza Roadster” power, handling and safety need to be in an equilibrium. Adaptive LED headlights…

…and ceramic composite brakes. The generated high temperatures…

…are cooled through intakes and outlets…

…in the aluminium body.

The huge grille gives the hint: cooling is essential when it comes to…

… high-revving engines. The 480 bhp V-8 is mounted just behind the front axle,…

… resulting in a perfect weight balance and best handling dynamics.

OK, I won’t bore you with details. Now the fun starts!

You have a sleek Roadster,…

… the rear hatch opens.

Now the roof comes up…

…and the rear screen.

The roof locks in place…

…and the rear hatch closes again.

Then the rear screen moves down and locks.

Finally the c-pillars come up.

To make it perfect, the small side windows close (the only parts that have to be built on. There is no way to conceal them).

A few details of the roof.

The c-pillars.

The side windows ;-)

Note that the trunk can still be opened…and is VERY roomy now.

360 degrees again… of pure high-performance GT.

I really hope you enjoyed the new “Monza Roadster” as much as I did while building it. Please comment and discuss.

Ciao & Thanks for your time, Jens

Wow!! Tell me why I never noticed this MOC. It's awsome! And that convertible feature - well.. I had a bigger space in my Himiko, that's why you can't believe of the easiness. But that only means, that you've put much more work in it and that's something hardly anyone can be proud of - not everyone has the patience. Respect man... thumbs up!

This is a beautiful Lego Ferrari. The California being my absolute favorite Ferrari, I love this. The detail you have put into this model is amazing, but the folding convertible top is unbeatable. My convertible's top has to be taken apart and stowed away by hand. :)

That's the most brilliant piece of Lego-engineering I've seen a long, long time. The car is worth 5 even without the roof, but the roof is the most astounding part! That must of taken hours of trial and error. Thanks for an awesome post : ) I don't think this will be beaten until someone attaches a micro-motor. Massive well done!
