Flying Dutchman: Construction Journal: Entry 1
rising from the depths of the sea...
About this creation
UPDATE: It's finished, click here

this is the first Construction Journal for my largest lego ship ever.
(I got that construction-journal business from Kelso's Invisible Hand)

I got interested in the Flying Dutchman. I'm addicted to the pirate theme, I can't control it, help !
...
I'm trying out some things, I built the bow like it should look about, to get an image of how the shape will be, how many bricks I will need.
I decided to use grey and dark gray, absolutly NO new grey, I hate the new grey and brown, I can live with the new dark grey, it is actually useful for building military vehicles. For the Dutchman I might use I tan too, it goes nicely with old gray.
Anyway, I figured I'll have to destroy my pirate port and Temple of Dust to get enough grey bricks.
Mustafar is no more by the way.

An important part of the ship is almost done, the Triple Gun. I had already used it on the Shadow but without the chains.

My costum anchor, I think I'll use regular ones for the dutchman.
thisone is too big.

the part I made is not going to remain that way, there will probably change some things.
I just worked out some Idea's.
I haven't figured out how to do the gunports, the Dutchman doesn't have those hatches like my other pirate ships.
and that's not the only problem, the dutchman has lots of details, like demonfaces and seacreatures carved out in the boat.

My ship will not be the same a the Dutchman in Pirates of the caribbean, I studied the ship and I cannot make it that way,
I decided to make the ship with regular hullpieces, 3 midsections (or 4, I don't know yet)
it will not be on minifigure scale because of that (it will be a bit too small).

here are some pictures of the real Dutchman.

So this was it...for now,
It will take some time before I can work more on it, I guess the next vacation...

this is great so far! trust me, I know how hard it is to make something that looks like it's sea bashed etc., and it's a LOT harder than it looks!

This is highly detailed. I can't wait to see how the ship looks as a whole. I think this looks a bit bricky though. I hope you try and add a more sea weathered look. Keep making more ships!

Very nice job so far. Are you planning on making an interior? I personally think that the front of the Flying Dutchman is the coolest, I think you nailed it! I can't wait to see more!
