Large Ornithopter
A civilian two-seater ornithopter.
About this creation

Please note that even though there should be some substance to the wings, the cloth-like covering has been left off s no-one had made a cloth strong enough to support that kind of pressure, nor light enough to be used on a plane, nor stretchy enough to fit that kind of shape-shifting.

Windshield shot. The windshield is made of two roof-pieces from a train crossing, and a grey sloped windshield from the great big Dino Hunters helicopter.

Overhead shot with the wings folded.

rear landing gear. There is actually a bit of spring there, caused by the rubber bands. The cylinder above is the engine.

The tail.

The vertical bit can change airflow by flexing.

The engines.

This is the side view of the cockpit.

The opening door.

There is room for 3 people, or 2 with baggage. They sit tandem.

The door is hinged on one single arm.

Rear view of the underside, looking towards the aft storage compartment, and in the backwash zone of the AAM and the casing zone of the cannon.

Nose shot again.

More engine.

This complicated bit of SNOT holds the cockpit onto the frame.

The cannon.

what happens during a hard landing.

The frame snaps. I probably could have done a better job than that Exo-Force ball joint.

Door shot.

3/4 shot of the plane.

Another shot of the tail.

When I was originally making this, I was really inspired by Frank Herbert's Dune. There is a passage where the Duke is making a heavy takeoff, and the book talks about him cranking the wings out to a longer length, so...

I made them adjustable.

They bend, for dives and maneuvering.

One parting shot, with the wings folded like a bat waddling into the cave for the night.

Good night.

Sorry to wake you up, but I just discovered that this post is on page seven out of however many pages of SciFi MOCs are here on MOCpages, when ranked by rating. Thanks to all three of you who rated my creation! (No sarcasm intended!)
