My first creation for a fictional trading city in a far away galaxy was the Tower of Tripoli. Named after a real county established (on Earth of course) as a crusader state between 1109 and 1289 AD. It was later absorbed by Antioch. It stood where modern day Lebanon resides. I'm quite the crusades lover so I used its name for various MOCs in this city. The tower itself is an octagonal structure with a large dome for a roof, supported by four large arches beneath the dome, forming an old method of strong dome construction called the 'pendentive', often used in Byzantine Architecture. The function of the tower is not yet decided, possibly a place of worship?
About this creation
Here is a view inside the tower itself with the dome removed from the top. The walls form an octagon and provide ample space for a mini fig to stand up in, also allowing plenty of space for a small group to stand. I may add some internal design at a later date, but have not decided its function yet.
Heres a view into the tower from the doorway, one design flaw in the doorway being only two studs wide, meaning a mini fig must move sideways to get in. I attributed this into the story behind the structure however by explaining how the mini figs who built it many centuries ago were a lot smaller than the modern mini fig, thanks to poor diets!
Here is a view of the dome and spire. I am quite proud of the dome as it is my first, I need to soften it with flat pieces though to get a better, less rigid curved look and also need to make each side equal, as it is more of an oval than circle at the base.
