The Dragonstar is a powerful destroyer in the Space Force fleet
About this creation

The Dragonstar firing it's powerful main guns!
The Dragonstar is a space battleship in the Lego Space Force fleet. It is a destroyer-class vessel with a crew of nine. It's armament includes particle cannons, torpedoes, robot fighters and the Wave Motion gun. The model is built to Lego minifigure scale and is 163 studs long, 40 studs wide, and 46 bricks tall from the ventral fin to the bridge tower. The model contains over 15,000 Lego pieces and weighs about 30 lbs.

It took me about 5 months to make the Dragonstar. Initially, I made the model for display at Brickswest 2003. I followed the same building style I established with my earlier capital ship models (castle walls, baseplates, etc.) and made Dragonstar a "ship of the line." Of course, it was an improvement over the earlier ships in many ways. However, my first attempt needed improvement. The hull was boxy and the underside lacked any detail because I built it with 16 X 32 baseplates.
So I amassed many, many gray slopes, tore apart the top and bottom of the ship and redesigned it. Along the way, I made other improvements such as redesigning the main guns (thanks to tips from Kyle Keppler) and applying more detail to the exterior. The result is the model displayed here.

My favorite view of Dragonstar, capturing the heavy Star Blazers influence.

This starboard view of Dragonstar shows it's lateral and ventral weaponry, enabling the ship to fire in almost any direction. Note that the lateral missile bays are angled 45 degrees forward and backward to increase Dragonstar's firing field

This rear view shows Dragonstar's propulsion system. Dragonstar has a central Wave Motion Engine for warp/hypersapce travel and lateral main thrusters for combat maneuvering.

The business end of Dragonstar--the Wave Motion Gun. This doomsday sort of weapon emits a powerful highly charged tachyon beam that wipes out anything in it's path and within range.

A split view of the top and bottom. Unlike my cap ships before, Dragonstar features an underside as detailed (if not more) as the top and sides of the ship.

Seated at command for Dragonstar's maiden voyage is the Grand Admiral of the Space Force. In front of him are the navigator and pilot stations. Behind him in this view are stations for science and communication. Also visible in the back is the ladderwell leading up from the main deck.

Seated behind the GA in this view are stations for engineering and fire control. In back is the ladderwell down to the main deck.

A full interior view of the main deck. From the left is the Wave Motion Gun and control room, then main airlocks, crew quarters, ladderwell, and main engine room.

Dragnstar's interior was inspired mainly by the Discovery in "2001: A Space Odyssey." The stark and sterile monochrome interior, accented by the studless floors, adds to the futuristic look. The floors were created by laying a stack of 1 x 1 white bricks and gray plates on the side. In retrospect, the interior seems a bit too clean for this kind of ship.

Inside the engine control room looking forward through crew cabin. I removed the engine to get this shot.

Inside the crew cabin looking toward the airlock accessway and Wave Motion Gun control room.

Inside the Wave Motion Gun control room looking all the way back to the engine room. "Hovering" next to the crewman is a robot assistant. These robots interface with the ships's automated systems and help crew monitor shipboard functions and perform certain repairs.

Main airlock door open. Note the contrast between Dragonstar's gritty, utilitarian exterior and clean, minimalist interior.

On the underside of the ship, just aft of the ventral fin, are bays for 4 droid fighters. The droid fighters are primarilly for defense but can serve as scouts or decoys.

A single droid fighter with a human minifig for scale.

A closer view of the engine room reveals some of the wiring and conduits under the floor grating.

The main engine unit by itself, with a human minifog for scale. The main engine uses a matter/anti-matter fusion reactor to generate warp/hyperspace power. Like the rest of Dragonstar's interior, the details on the engine are very minimal. I wanted to convey a sense of power within a compact and simple design.

A single main gun turret. The main guns project a powerful energy beam that can penetrate most energy shields and destroys armor at the molecular level.

Another view of a main gun turret showing how the barrels move independently. Thanks to Kyle Keppler for inspiring the design and tilting mechanics.

A dozen space mines are stored underneath the ship, below the main engine. The space mines are equipped with thrusters and magnetic field emitters to guide them closer to targets, as well as sensors to detect enemy vessels.

A single space mine with a human minifig for scale. The grinning minifig staning aside a high yield mine inspired someone to title this picture: "Smile! Hull crushing death awaits you."

I'm just starting to design My Own capital ship In LDD, with the intents to make it into reality eventually Do you use that first to get a feel for your shapes? How do you know what parts you're going to need? Any tips would be gratefully recieved and thank you again for the inspiration
Thanks Andy. I've only used LDD a few times. For me, using real bricks is the only way I know to build. As far as part selection, it all depends on what building approach I'm taking. If I'm building from an original sketched design then I have to consider which combination of Lego parts will best yield the shape or angle I'm after. But if my approach is driven by a part itself then I'm basically building around it. I've found that common starting points for a design are new parts, windscreens in particular, or single part used repeatedly in series to create a certain shape. Sometimes I'll see a part and say "That would make an interesting front end for a spaceship" and then I'm off. |

I know the inspiration and work you devote to each of their models is priceless but I would like to buy this model I will not sell them but at least a manual of instructions should make and sell my email rivalto@hotmail.com
Hi Jose. This model no longer exists. It was taken apart a long time ago. Unfortunately for me to create instructions in digital form for this or any of my other large spaceship models would be painstakingly difficult and extremely time consuming. At most, instructions for fighter-sized creations might be possible. |

I like your design. Persaonally, I like the engines and the big cannons the most, too. By the way, a very similar design for them would also work on a classic LEGO battleship, too. How many studs long is your capital ship anyway? Personally, I like wings on a capital space craft myself but that is only because of the cool idea of what I call the "hidden armada" philosophy. I will explain more of that later. Anyway, I would love to work with you on a project but since I have mostly bulk sets, I can not do the color scheme or only three to four colors on a vessel, that, and I only have about 10,000-20,000 pieces total in my collection. Are you interested in helping me out, Daniel? Please let me know in a return post. Thank you. |

Ok,, this is like, the 3rd time i've commented on this ship. The two other times were praise, this time, i'm gonna put Dragonstar to the test. If you read this, please has a look at my 1st SHIP, Overlord. Anyway, i'll skip to the point. Those main turrets can penetrate MOST energy shields but Overlords shields are raw energy. And Overlord has an Anti-matter cannon, pretty much destroying anything at the atomic level instead of molecular. Oh well, who'll win in a fight then?? No war was intended. |

Dragonstar is one of the most impressive gunships I've ever seen.
Your work is an inspiration for me. |

Wow! This is by far my favorite LEGO creation I've seen so far. It is just amazing. The colors look nice, and having that many bricks is an accomplishment in itself! I could never dream of making something this big. It just is, well "Wow!" |

WOOAAAHHHHHHHH!!!! Incredible model! This has great inspiration for a sci-fic book I'm writing (I won't copy it though), as well as my Allegiance-class light cruiser(see it on my page). Great model! Oh, if you ever want some shots of sci-fic troopers to Photoshop into the interior, I've got some that I'd be glad to send pics of. Check 'em out at my page (Squad 13). |

Great ship here Dan! I've actually followed your building for quite some time. The articulated gun barrels on the turret are a great touch and the attention to detail is excellent as always. In answer to your question to me, the R-Wing contest can be found in the Contest Forum at From Bricks to Bothans. (www.fbtb.net) Sadly, that contest has been closed to new entries and the second round of voting is the next phase. FBTB runs contests every other month and I'm sure we'd love to have you join in! |

Awsome. The only thing I wonder about is the safety of storing explosive mines unprotected under the main engine.;) |

I love all of the stuff you have made but this one is the coolest. Everything is perfect except for the crew...they look a little "old style lego" they need a makeover. Still, this is my favorite sight on the web. Please make more! |

Wow... That is incredible... My entire Junkyard Armada would have a hard time taking on a ship with that kind of weaponry (even though I haven't posted all of my ships yet). |

THe best looking capital ship i have seen. Better than all the rest. Much better. The bridge, guns and the interior are all very cool. But there is one suggestion i make. In my opinion, the ship is a tiny bit too tall and a little too thin. But even still, good enough to blow my mind |

Wow! this ship is sweet! What I really liked about it (beside the awsome greeblies, the powerful looking cannons, the deadly looking mines, and the cool bridge,) is that you DID NOT use the base plates. I really dislike the use of them on ships. Five stars most definently |
