Full-stud bodywork, V8 engine, automatic gearbox, RWD with differential, steering, opening doors and adjustable seats.
About this creation
Street legal Rat Rod with working V8 driving the rear wheels through an auto gearbox (Drive, Park, Reverse) and rear differential. Detailed interior and engine, working steering and opening doors. Made using old-school Technic. Width: 24 studs, Length: 44 studs, Height: 13 bricks and 2 plates. (Click pictures to enlarge)
Doors open. The body panels are attached using beams and connector-with-stud bricks. This allows you to create larger, curvier bodywork with less bricks. It does mean studs are everywhere, but I quite like that- it is LEGO after all! Check out Tim Inman's CORR Truck to see how it's done (although his uses axels rather than beams).
Profile: My favourite view. The body is based on a 1930's Ford five-window (they don't count the windscreen) then roof chopped and channeled over the chassis.
Front 3/4: Full-stud bodywork, this is becoming quite a rare technique now.
Working big block V8 with timing chain and side exit exhausts, this would be loud! Inspired by Ruud Stam's Muscle Car engine. It originally had a massive supercharger but it looked a bit cartoon-y for a street rod so I swapped it for a dustbin lid air filter.
Rear: With the door open you can see how the bodywork is made. I was running out of bricks by this point so the rear is quite simple. Luckily as this is a Rat Rod simple is good!
Spartan interior with adjustable seats, working steering linked to the steering wheel and working gearbox.
The drivetrain works the same as a real car; the engine turns the same way whether the model is moving forwards or backwards (providing you're in the right gear), whilst neutral disconnects it from the wheels. Click here for pictures of the gearbox internals.
Top: The wheels are the same size because a) they're all I have spare and b) most street rods have equal or very similar size wheels front and rear whereas strip/drag rods tend to have skinny fronts and fat rears.
Inspiration: UK Rat Rod. Note same size wheels.
In true Rat Rod style this will probably continually evolve and be fettled with. If you like what you've seen check out the MOCpages Rod Club for more LEGO Rods.

This is a great build, with its chunky, old Technic tires and its honest Lego studs all over the body. The shape looks good and an excellent reproduction of the car in the photo. The car looks really solid. It's the sort of thing that I would have loved to have been able to build when I built Technic cars.
Thanks DR and all the others below - it's nice seeing this thing is still getting comments : ) |

Nice rod. Thanks a lot for the nice comment on my latest masterpiece. It is red because that is what I have. And the side scoops, Lambo doors and tailfin were added to fill the 'unique' category. I've never been famous for being normal. :) Besides, I thought that a big expanse of red looked bad there on the side. Thanks for the encouragement about the bodywork--I like it myself. The engine is dear to my heart as well...took me about a month. And I'm thrilled that I made it into the Member's Rods section of ~The Rod Club~...you just made my day. -matthew- |

Dang, great accuracy on this one. The engine is amazingly accurate, well though out and put together perfectly, 5/5. |
