I guess it sort of works like the actual thing. You must attach a trash can instead of the claw reaching for it. However, with enough force the device could probably knock small objects like paper crumbles out of the can. It can even close completely, too. All you have to do is remove the trash can.

I'm no good at working with technic, but I estimate that if you were to build this device to work exactly like the real thing, you'd have to ditch the vehicle and it would probably be as big as a desk lamp!
