This is a theoretical version I created of the Venator Mark III Star Destroyer. There is a Mark II class on Wikipedia already, so I made this the Mark III version developed just before the Imperial Class Star Destroyer.
About this creation
For those die hard Star Wars fans, this does not comply with the official lexicon. I was more interested in creating a hypothetic version of the Star Destroyer, which was created from my Star Destroyer and AT AT Walker sets. This version is 44 inches long, 28 inches wide and 17 inches tall. If the original Imperial Star Destroyer set was used as a comparative scale, the Venator Mark III Star Destroyer would be 1900 meters long, 1210 meters wide and 735 meters tall (with the landing gear extended). This makes it significantly larger than the standard Imperial Class Star Destroyer, and quite a bit bigger than the 1,137 meter long Venator Class Star Destroyer. I guess this would qualify as a super carrier.
I borrowed some of the design elements from both the Venator and Imperial Class versions, and added some twists of my own. Some of these design decisions were made purely from the design aesthetic that I wanted, and others were dictated by some limitations of the parts I had. I would have loved to create more intricately detailed engines like Erik Varszegi's Venator Star Destroyer, but I didn't have the fully resources of Lego corporate at my disposal. I'm also trying to avoid the addiction of buying pieces on Bricklink.
This took about 30 hours to conceptualize, design and build. I created more realistic landing gear than the original Imperial Star Destroyer Lego set had. The landing gear for the Venator Star Destroyers shown in Attack of the Clones were very spindly and not as logical as most of the ship design elements, IMHO. I hope people enjoy this rendition. It doesn't have some of the detail that Mark Kelso's Invisible Hand or Thomas Benedikt's whole series of Clone War ships, but it was enjoyable to build. Their models had to be accurate to a definable reference, so their efforts are significantly more impressive than mine.
Here is a view of the port side. I obviously incorporated the side docking ports from the Venator Class, as well as the heavily raked tower bridge.
On the bow end, I included doors that open to the docking bay that actually runs all the way back to the ventral docking bay on this model. The doors in this photo are closed, but are the two 4x4 plates along the central axis.
At the aft end, I endeavored to add more interest and detail to the engines than that used in the Imperial Class. This is where I wish I had parts to make much more interesting engines, but they do the job I think.
This is a close up of the bridge section. I started to introduce a single bridge, with some hints of the shape of the Imperial Class bridge. I also borrowed the concept that the actual command bridges are installed on forward projections on many of the ship designs used during the Clone Wars (Venator Class, Invisible Hand, Commerce Guild Destroyer, etc.)
Here is a close up of the starboard side docking port.
Finally, here is a view of the ventral docking port with a working crane. The upper portions of the forward landing gear are also visible.

Steve,
I would like to try creating a near-replica of this wonderful set myself. I've got the pieces and then some. If possible, I would really appreciate it if you posted some more pictures, of the interior construction and support structure specifically.
I will in any case attempt to recreate this, using my imagination and a combination of the 6211 and 10030 instructions, but a few pictures would be really, really helpful, and rather awesome of you to do frankly. This will take a super-long time whatever I do, but a few pictures could tone down that time a good amount. |

you know it always amazes me to see people doing this building these HUGE mocs while i stick with the small one like the imperial I class destroyer and so forth. this ship is down right outstandingly awsomeness. i love how you incorporated the imperial class and venator class sections to the ship because of course this was the period of transition between the republic and imperial eras. unfortunatly the engines on every imperial or venator class, well like almost all huge capitol crusiers the engines never turn out right they always look plain and unexciting still you made this ship amazing and this is your reward 5/5. OH YEAH. :) |

Considering the fact that you used a limited amount of pieces this is a thrilling build. The shape is great and the colourcombination is realistic. One could have some doubts about the rear end, but all in all this looks great. |

FINALLY!!! :) A person besides myself designs an exceptional, custom Star Destroyer! This is awesome, and HUGE. Very sleek and clean-cut, definately the coolest Star Destroyer I have seen. Definately shows that all you need is a BIG idea, with only a few sets. I agree, it almost takes as much time thinking about design as it does building/editing it. I'd love for you to turn this into a fully-operational minifig battleship! You must!
PLEASE check out my Dictator-Class Star Destroyer, it has a crew of 64 minifigs and a nice, functional interior...really clean-cut like yours too. |

Well I see all the greats (Young, Jones, Kelso Ocean and on and on) have already put in their two cents. Now this is why I don't do "cracklink" (yet, anyway). I was thinking of taking out a second mortgage so I could start. "honey, can we take out a second... no, sorry." Steve, this is... is their a better word than "genius"? If there is you deserve it. If you've done nothing else other than inspire Kelso to do another SHIP, (but don't worry, you have done much more) then you've done enough. (come on Mark, you know you want to...) Good one Steve. can't wait for the next one. Later ~ Chris. |
