From the Studio Ghibli movie Porco Rosso.
About this creation
COMPLETED--02/17/08
I am happy to say that my most ambitious project ever is finally completed. It hasn't been that long a build compared to other people's but I started it in November and have since then made way too many Bricklink orders to finish it. I would make an order from 2 or 3 stores only to find I forgot to order some needed bricks or had to modify my build to get a more true to the original design and as a result had to make more small orders. I hope everybody finds this a worthy homage to Porco Rosso! If you haven't seen Porco Rosso, watch it as soon as you can: it's one of my favorite movies.
The build for the engine was completed early on and made me very happy to see it actually turn out.
The front end was a challenge. I had to include the machine guns but it took me a while to figure out how.
Scale is really dictated by available Lego parts. I think I'm lucky that everything came together as well as it did. The propeller for example is almost perfect scale wise.
"A pig that can't fly is just a pig." That's my favorite line from the movie.. it might not be that way in the English version and is different from the subtitled version I have but that's the way I think it translates best into English from the original Japanese.
I really wanted the cockpit to be as detailed as possible since Ghibli put so much great detail into the movie version. I was able to build the foot peddles the dials and the control stick so I'm pretty satisfied.

I usually don't much care for anime but I saw Porco Rosso yesterday and found it surprisingly enjoyable. I'd never heard of it before seeing this MOC, so thanks for the movie tip! |

Fantastic! Like Andrew said, you've captured the overall shape very well. This is a fitting homage indeed for an excellent movie. |

Great angling on the wings, and you've captured the shape of Porco's plane very well. |

That is a really great subject for lego airplanes. You probably won't see another Italian flying boat or any other Italian airplane in legos. Very nice!! I wonder if you could build a 3 engine bomber like an SM.79?? |

It has arrived... in all its glory...
The hull is really well shaped here. As usual I wonder how you got the wings to make that angle without a lot of ugly exposed structure. Great job! |

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!! And a fitting tribute to one of my favourite movies too; ah, great minds DO think alike. I know exactly what you mean about reordering from Bricklink: oh the AGONY of forgetting 1 or 2 tiny parts! Great build mate, very enjoyable! |
