Taipei 101, Taipei Taiwan
Microscale model of Taipei 101
About this creation
29 photos on Brickshelf.com

The model is 31.5 inches (0.8m) in height and is approximately the same scale as my other microscale skyscrapers. The model occupies one large 15"x15" baseplate. The eight segments that make up the pagoda-like top of the tower are stacked over a central rigid techinic beam spine providing adequate structural integrity to resist the dreaded "overturning moment".

Digital Models
Download a LEGO Digital Designer file of this model created by Oliver Albrecht. There are two files:
Base 3079 pieces
Tower 1934 pieces

Overview of the tower and the indoor shopping center located at the base. Having never been to Taipei, in order to design the model I collected over 300 photos from the internet. Many of them show rare views or uncommon areas of the complex. The shopping center and surrounding plaza took far more time to research and design than the tower!

Due to the scale and limitations on the angles of the wedge plates, the sides of the tower have steeper slopes than the actual building. I didn't want to introduce gaps at the corners, so as far as accuracy goes it is as is. Unfortunately sand green wedge plates do not exist, so I used light grey at the corners.

Looking up. I used sand green plates behind the light blue tile grilles to help give the facade a greenish-blue tint.

The shopping mall located at the base of the tower. Three covered elevated walkways provide access to the mall from the parking structures across the street. I think they detract from the architecture, but I had to include them for completeness.

My favorite detail is the small skylights located above the mall that are created with hinge plates. The white atrium roof of the mall was tricky to design (and look smoothly integrated) as the stepped sides run at a 45 degree angle to remainder of the rooftop.

One of the detailed entrances to the mall. Some pearl light grey parts are used to give the look of polished metal.

Ah. Thats a very smart idea. Anyhow, what do you recommend I should build for my first landmark? I have lots of white, black and grey pieces, so, I was thinking about the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Sears Tower. Any suggestions?

Quoting Clan Father Tom Olivieri: S.C. This is just phenomenal. One question I have though; in one of the first couple of pictures, you said something about stabilizing the structure. What piece(s) did you use to do this? Anyhow, excellent work!
Click on the link above for the additional photos in my Brickshelf gallery. You will see a couple of shots showing a long yellow beam built from technic bricks that the tower modules slide onto.

Re-posted from my new account: AAWWEESSOOMMEE !! Thanks for outdoing my TaiPei 101 that I built last year. ( http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/33036 ) Having built this with Lego also, I have the utmost respect and admiration for your courage. A building where nothing is vertical is not very Lego-friendly. You nailed the color too! I think when I started looking at buying transparent pieces for the glass, I had a nervous breakdown trying to find in cheap abundance the light blue that you used. At the time I was working at a Taiwanese company (TSMC), and after polling a lot of my Taiwanese co-workers, I realized that they didn't even know the true color of the building. While I opted for green, your light blue looks MUCH better. My phallic symbol is 2x larger, certainly, but I have to give it to you, yours is more true to form. Again, GREAT JOB!!

This is a perfect rendition, it looks exactly like how I remembered it. The 101 has that weird blue-green glass that we seem to overuse in Taiwan, but blue works perfectly since there isn't a 100% accurate Lego color. Did you happen to build the massive ball weight that hangs off the top floor inside the tower?

Once again you've created a masterpiece. Drop me an e-mail... perhaps we could do an architechural layout of famous landmarks from around the world. I think you're from the Detroit area?? which is fairly close.
