Metal Gear Solid REX
From the popular Metal Gear Solid video game, I present Metal Gear REX in Lego form. Started in April 07, finished Nov. 07.
About this creation

Ever since I played the game a few years ago, I wanted to build REX out of Lego. However it seemed impossible at the time, lacking the pieces and the know-how. I've seen other attempts of course, but there was one thing that bugged me about them; they couldn't stand up. If I couldn't make a REX that could stand up, then I'd feel like the MOC was a failure.

However I started thinking about it again at the beginning of this year, and I started planning how I could do it. I realized it would be pretty easy if I used lots of SNOT to make the structure light and strong. The boxy shape of the game model itself made this easier, so mostly I tried to base the direction of the MOC on that.

I'll be the first to admit its not perfect. There's lots of detail I sacrificed to keep it light and strong because I was determined to make REX stand. The end result is, I'm pretty proud of it overall, but I will probably keep tinkering with it off and on to try and make it better.

All images available here: Brickshelf Gallery

Now for the pics!

REX is most often shown in the concept art and in the game sitting on it's 'stilts'. It's a great idea that makes REX look hunched and ready to spring into action at any moment.

Front view. I think the radome is a little big, and it's not very accurate, but I think it looks pretty cool.

Side view in a crouch. REX's legs are pretty extreme for a mech. In terms of biology, the lower legs are always almost perpendicular to the thighs, the lower leg is extremely short, and the foot is really long. So really, the stilts are like high-heels that keep REX's foot from laying flat.

Back views. I used the concept art Hideo Kojima made as background for some of the images for two reasons. One, because I referenced them heavily during construction, and two, so that we can all see where I messed up or where it's pretty accurate. Plus it makes the images more interesting.

Just standing around. Though I cropped the background out, I assure you REX is standing without any support. I was disappointed when I tried it the first time, as it kept rolling forward at the toes. The 'foot pads' just didn't extend forward enough to prevent it. And since I was going with accuracy, I wasn't willing to make them do so. The solution was the angled plates on the front of the foot; the inside tips brace on the ground and make it stand quite solidly. REX is 17-18 inches tall, depending on where you measure.

One key detail I missed, is that REX's neck should be able to bend down. However I didn't realize this until I was practically done, and I'm not really willing to rebuild it just for that; the torso construction is complicated enough. Other than that, I'm pretty pleased with it.

I have to say, REX is one of those mechs that looks great from any angle. As for my little Snake figure, you'll have to forgive the lack of accuracy. Plus I got lazy and didn't drop the background out, but oh well.

Another main requirement I gave myself, was that REX had to have an opening cockpit that could hold a minifig. Though there's not one in these pics, as long as the minifig can lie back (as in, no helmets or big hair), the jaw closes easily and completely. Initially I used studs to keep it shut, but that got tiresome after awhile and would slowly work the angled pieces of the nose apart. I rebuilt it to use magnets, and haven't looked back.

The 'backpack' holds 8 surface-to-air missiles. Though mentioned only once in the game and never used, the hatches are visible when you cross over to get to the control room, and in the concept drawings. This is the one thing I wasn't sure I could do, since it was hard to anticipate how heavy and unstable it would make the upper body. In the end I had to use a black weight block, since the head was too heavy. I think the missiles are a little too short really, but I'm happy I was able to make the 'backpack' come together so well.

The anti-personnel rockets in the knees were pretty easy to do, and though a little big I like how the smoke grenade launchers turned out. The underside of the leg is pretty barren, but I did throw a motion sensor/camera in just behind the toes. I know it was never mentioned or used in the game, but I felt it needed something. The green info image was just for fun to make it look like it was taken from the game, and all the info is from some fansite.

Now that you've browsed through the details, lets see some action! I constructed a wall for use as a backdrop, and ended up using it for these scenes. It's not really based on the game but it works pretty well and let me act a few scenes out.

For some of these scenes I had to put REX's leg up. To do that, I had to cheat and use a ton of grey blocks to make a stand. Poor REX has no flamingo blood in him.

Looks like a bad day for Grey Fox.

Again, forgive my lack of accurate minifigs, but lets just pretend Liquid never took those sunglasses off from earlier in the game.

Looks like a bad day for Liquid Snake. In the game, the tip of the rail gun touches the ground when REX is destroyed, but my rail gun isn't long enough. Oh well.

Thanks for looking! I hope you enjoyed everything. As a final note, REX is NOT for sale and won't be anytime soon. Thank you for the offers though. Also, I DO NOT HAVE INSTRUCTIONS. I'm not trying to be mean but I simply don't have time or the desire to make them.

Is it me, or did Liquid sound very british at the end of the game? Aside from my rambling, you have been such an inspiration for me over the years, first came rex, then I received help from you in my E-Mails, and ever since, my building has been going strong, thanks for everything, and congrats on MOTD again!

DETAIL. Detail, detail, detail. It's almost overwhelming, it's incredible, inedible (hopefully)... I haven't actually say how good it is compared to the actual thing, but it kicks some serious arse regardless! Armed to the teeth. Keep up this kind of building and our lego company rivals will kneel at our feet! The REAL question is... why didn't liquid snake put in a windshield...? Anyway, I give it a 6/5

When I saw the WIP pics in Brickshelf, I wasn't sure it was possible, even for someone with your experience with heavy mechs. But the attention to detail in this is amazing! Some of the joints are really creatively done.

Undeniably awesome. The legs seem a little bit big compared to the head to me, and the whole thing is awfully studdy, but it's still a fantastic creation - certainly way better than my ancient one. I especially like the fact that you made it huge, but still took the time to include cool little details like the ones on the knees. Nice!

This is an exceptional MOC! The time spent on it was well worth it and definitely shows. It's just as huge as it should and I can see how standing would be an issue but you obviously were able to deal with that and ended up with a poseable giant! I love the aggressive pose pictures, it looks sweet! Nice background too.
