1969 Baldwin-Motion Phase III SS-427 Corvette
After many months of building, tweaking, and rebuilding, it’s finally done! I present to you all the new and improved 1969 Baldwin-Motion Phase III SS-427 Corvette!
About this creation

Now on Lego Ideas!

The model initially started as a standard 1969 427 Corvette, but it became clear that in order to make the whole car blue I would have to paint the rear taillight pieces and the license plate frame. Then in July I stumbled upon Austin Nomorinfo’s creation and its unique paintjob. I did some research and that’s when I found this article and instantly fell in love with the car and its history:

Once my mind was set on creating the SS I began tweaking my old design. I changed the typical 427 hood to the customized L88 scooped hood:

I redesigned the rear so that the curves would be cleaner in white:

And last but not least, redesigned the roof to accommodate the stripe, but also allow for my favorite feature: T-Tops!

If you compare my renders to the finished piece, you’ll see that just about everything except the front end and sides changed in the building process, and I was able to add little touches like turn signals, sun visors, and the radio antenna.

In LLD I broke the model into 22 parts and captured the build process below. It took my wife and I an evening per section to put together:

Below are more shots of the finished model. Enjoy!

Quoting Kurt's MOCs Great work! Excellent shape and proportions and the details are amazing.
Thanks Kurt! I kept piling on details until at some point I just had to call it "done". The interior and engine bay especially are a result of constant tweaking...

Quoting Marcus Paul Fantastic shaping. If only this would be possible in 6 or 7w ... ;-)
Thanks! I'm lucky Lego made wedges small enough to make an 18w, so to see someone nail a C3's curves at 6w would be pretty incredible.

Quoting MortalSwordsman . Wow, it has turned out fantastically well. Wonderful work on an all time classic. Fingers crossed for you on Lego Ideas and congrats on the potential inclusion in the book. Very well deserved.
Thank you so much Joe! That means a lot coming from you! As you can probably tell, your design inspired a lot of the choices I made here (especially the hood slope and rear quarter panels). I'm also pretty sure Lego took notice of your door handles when it came time to make their Mini!

Quoting Alessandro Segato no word can explain this beauty and all the work done behind. I fully support your project on Lego Ideas too, and i'll happy to spend 200$ for this Corvette rather than Batman's Tumbler (my 2 cents). Anyway, how many pieces in total? Good luck! :)
Thanks for your support! I think it's in the 1500-1600 piece range...

Great looking Corvette. Quite a lot of car builders on this scale get the front, the rear, and the top looking good, but lack the shaping on the sides, but you've managed to get superb shaping all round. Great work.

Quoting Senator Chinchilla . Absolutely stunning build! That paintjob is really great and those taillights are just a bit too genius for me to comprehend, which is a pretty rare thing for me at this point. The engine is also very well detailed, looks like the real deal. Proper piece of kit, this! You should be proud.

Quoting Brieuc BAILLOT Wow! The 3D model was awesome but this real one is more than fantastic! The paint job is a very good idea, it's better than all blue. The engine is perfectly designed! Just one thing about the interior: I find it's too narrow when you compare with the size of the car, why don't you put a larger steering wheel? Is it possible to have the Building Instructions? :D And I hope you'll put it on Lego Ideas, it would be a great LEGO set! ;) Keep building supercars like that!
Thanks Brieuc BAILLOT! The striping was an afterthought and now it's one of my favorite parts! I agree with you on the interior width. The problem I ran into is that in order to get the the door contours right I had to use 2x2x* sloped bricks, which made the doors SUPER thick (seen in the 6th picture). The steering wheel in there now already rubs up against the inner door when closed too.

Quoting Sam the first Good Gravy! Dave, I love this soooo very much. Although I (personal) would have preferred the full roof, I love all of it. I also love that gif. 11/10, if ever there was one. =D
Thanks Sam! I like the full roof too, and that's why it's got both!(you can see it in the last few frames of the gif ... it's interchangeable with the t-top roof)
