Rank challenge, MOC-off entry and a new character. What's more, I think I've pocketed my first new technique...
About this creation
Part the Next

Gold - that was what they were saying, and Dundar of Iremore wasn't going to let a rumour like that slip past. After all, he was a man of business, and it's the business of such men and women to go to other lands to plunder gold. An opportunity like that doesn't come around often, and when it does, it's time to capitalize on it.
That was the reason he was in this small town on the river. Set up on the quay was a small market selling nothing of interest. A man down on a wooden boardwalk, however, did catch his eye.

P1050174

"You there!" He shouted, attempting to attract the man's attention.
"Who, me?" the man nervously responded.
"You look like the sort of person who owns a boat."
"How do you mean?"
"You have a horned helmet, that's general a piece of headgear reserved for sailors who think they're tough"
"I don't think-" The alleged sailor began to retort, just as he was rudely interrupted by a man holding a big axe.

P1050175

"You hiring a boat? You know there's a tax on that. Hey, you're new! That means we'll need tourist tax and new guy tax from you too!" Dundar stopped and stared at the man. There was no tax in Rainos, everyone knew that. The man dressed patriotically in red and black, a notion ignored by most Raniosians. He had two cronies behind him, dressed the same way.
"And who are you lot then?" inquired Dundar.
"Tax collectors" one of the cronies behind him said, in a slow, triumphant tone, as if he'd just pronounced a really hard word. "We collecting money for the guvnerment." he said, oblivious to his mistake.
"Why," replied Dundar "It would be my pleasure to give you my money! But first, I need to ask you a question." They all stared at him blankly. "Where did you get those dashing suits, I'd really love to buy one. They really bring out the Rainosian spirit. Must be a little hot to wear though. Gods save Rainos, by the way." The two thick cronies at the back looked at each other, taking time to process what had just been said. They were pretty sure it had nothing to do with tax.

P1050176

The slighty brighter one, the group leader, realized he was being mocked, and took a step forward.
"Right," He began, but never finished, as Dundar spontaneously ripped his sword from his belt and swung it in an arc, chopping the 'tax collector''s arm clean off. As the man went down, screaming in agony, the two cronies still stared, paralysed with the sudden outbreak of hostility.

Dundar ran forward, charging with his sword raised at the sword raised at the first cronie, who in turn raised his blunt cutlass to parry.
P1050179

At the last moment, Dundar feigned and ducked beneath the parry.

P1050180

He quickly grabbed the man and put his sword to his throat, then turned to face the second cronie, the one who couldn't say government.
"Put down your weapon." he ordered. The cronie who Dundar was holding nodded to the other one. He put down his weapon. "Now jump in the water."

P1050181

"But I can't swim!" He protested.
"I'm sure your tax collector friend here will save you." After another nod from the man in Dundar's grip, the second cronie closed his eyes, ran and jumped in the water. Dundar threw the other man after him.
After a brief silence, the town cheered. Dundar looked around unexpectedly, before being approached by some woman.

P1050182

"Those men have been threatening us for over a year now! We've been living in poverty because of them! You're our saviour! In fact, think you should be our mayor!" The crowd cheered in approval. Taken aback, Dundar mumbled the word 'okay'. These people were crazy. All he did was chop a guy's arm off and throw some other guys in the water, but these people were greeting him like a small town hero. HE WAS A MAYOR NOW. The spontaneity of it all confused him, but he graciously accepted.

P1050183

A thought came to him.
"Who wants to be part of a giant trade network?"

P1050184

~4th wall/ tidbits/ additional commentary~

And those last words aren't just in story: who does want to be part of a giant trade network? I'm currently figureheading (good word, that) a new guild for the 'bad guys' (Rainosians, Enalicans, Outlaws) of LoM to join and make A LOT of money. We're opening up with a guild charter this month and we have one requirement: you MUST have at least one holding. Even if you do, you may not get admitted, because I just lied, and you have to have proper spelling and grammar too.

In terms of the story, I think I completed the challenge fully, and also NEW CHARACTER! This guy will be my primary character, and will be the face of all my economic endeavors. His name derivates (yes, I know the word is derives, but derivates sounds cooler.) from Dunbar, Yossarian's best friend in the classic novel Catch 22. I even managed to fit in a bit where he calls the townspeople crazy. Heck, maybe that's where Dunbar goes when he gets disappeared: to a fantasy universe with a slightly different name.

The build is, as I believe I've already mentioned, an entry to an MOC-off with the infamous BRICK, an emotionless android and master builder. This is your cue, Asad and Stephen, to say: "Oh, I totally forgot about that!", because I know you have. You two and Gilbert must each say which out of me and Brick's entries in this round is the best. Oh, and there's two more rounds.

To the rest of you, there's the build. And I'm happy with it. The only MAJOR problem I see with it, which I see with all my builds, is the flooring. It's terrible. Don't kill me. I'm very happy with the rest of it though, especially the two houses. The photos are quite bad, mostly because I delayed photographing this until I realized the weather wouldn't get any better, and I'd have to photograph it in bad light. Funny story about photographing this build actually. It was tipping down with rain, the skies were black and my dad was still at work: with the good camera. When all seemed lost, the clouds burst, the sun broke through and I heard the sound of eighties rock coming up the drive... After taking all the photos, I uploaded them to Flickr, started writing the story for MP, when all of a sudden a little red light started flashing above the word broadband on my modem. Yay. Well, at least it's up now. PICTURES!

Overall without figs.

P1050185

The building on stilts, or rather, supports. I really like this one, because it has some degree of character. The roof was a challenge, but I worked out something in the end.

Building on stilts

This shot is of the new technique I believe I've discovered. I'm dubbing it the UPRIGHT HALF PLATE OFFSET! (or UHPO (pronounced Oo-poh) for short). I forgot to take a picture showing you how it's done, so I suppose I'll show you the next time I build it, in another MOC-off entry, or maybe before, as a Flickr exclusive. (Ooooooooh!)

P1050187

A shot of the wall texturing. This was somewhat of an experiment, to see what mixing in normal bricks with textures looks like. I quite like it.

P1050188

My favourite part of this build has to be this, with a patio type thing supporting a second level. This isn't the last time you'll see this. (Oooooooooh!)

P1050189

Later gents! Remember to vote me for Rainos faction leader!

Quoting Julia LeeP Nice build, Joe! I don't have time for a critique, but you're improving very quickly. One thing though-- that "Later, Gents!"... I'm not sure if I need to tell you what I think of that :P
Thanks, but to be fair Julia, you are the only female in LoM, and among the 3 I've encountered on MP, so give me some slack.

Quoting Thomas of Tortuga OK, first off I'm thrilled that I can make Dunbar perfectly. Overall, you're accurate in your assessment of the build. The UPHO technique looks pretty nice, and the dock is nice-looking. The stilt technique looks pretty nice, but it seems like overkill for this scale. I would (in fact, I might) use that idea on a larger house, that would actually need to be supported like that. Also, I personally think mixing in regular bricks into the stonework was a bad idea. If you wanted to make a newer stone wall, I think Brick uses the perfect amount of texturing. For a super-detailed one, those bricks are too big. To me, that wall looks too plain and irregular. Maybe it would look fine if you made the SNOT details with a 1/2 plate outset, not a 1 plate one.
Thanks for the advice, I'll keep it in mind, and I'm glad my stilts have inspired you. That is what I've set out into the world to do: inspire people with stilts. Also, Dundar is the LoM character and Dunbar the Catch 22 one. I should never have even mentioned the latter, things'll get confusing.

Quoting Gilbert Despathens Welcome to Rainos, Joe! I can breathe a sigh of relief now - Sean-Thomas' switch to Mythron put them ahead of us, but now we're back in the lead. Oh, and remember to specify what type of holding this counts for. Right now it looks like a fishing village, but that wasn't your goal, was it?
Uhhh... This isn't a holding Gilbert. It's a rank challenge.

Quoting Danny McConnell Hey, I have yet to even upload my finished character intro, mainly due to it being long and composed of two characters (mine and a friend's) but I'm quite interested in this economic guild. I plan on being an outlaw; so I'll get back to you when I finish my intro and first couple builds.
You seem like a good builder, with a brain capable of spelling (you'd be surprised how many people don't these days), but I'm afraid you need to have at least one holding to join. This means you'll need to have the landholder rank, which requires 25 points. I'm sure if you're dedicated you can get that amount in no time, and I'll help you out if you need me to.
