Years after the introduction of the original, the next generation arrives to renew the fear of it's enemies.
About this creation
The major design changes of the Mod.3 were to it's turret. The Mastodon series is a primarily defensive tank, favoring heavy turret armor. The Mod.3's turret is a huge upgrade over the Mod.2E2, let alone all previous versions.
The most apparent structural change is the shorter turret. The height was reduced. As a result, several systems had to be moved around. The targeting system (The FSTM-03, an upgrade from the Mod.2E1/2 series) was placed in a more traditional position, closer to the center. The commander's hatch was lowered into the turret, instead of sitting on top. As such, the commander is much more well protected.
The other upgrade is to the cannon. The Mod.3 carries the Mk.192 125mm smoothbore cannon. This model is essentially identical to the Mod.2E1/2's Mk.191 with the exception of it's upgraded fume extractor.
As previously stated, certain systems had to be moved around. From this angle we can see that the M22 30mm autocannon has been moved to the right side of the Mk.192 Cannon. The Tanks's long-range radio antenna has also been modafied, with it's mounting much better protected than on previous models.
The most visually obvious upgrades to the Mod.3 are it's upgraded defense and survivability package.
Inherited from the Mod.2E2 is the 7.62mm gatling gun. Hohewever, this model has a substantially upgraded mounting. The gun now has the elevation to engage infantry in raised structures as well as providing a certain degree of anit-aircraft capability. Of course, the mounting also allows the cannon it's old range of negative elevation, allowing it to act as a rather effective area defense weapon. Lastly, the sighting equipment was upgraded with a set of thermal optics.
On each side of the turret is mounted two 81mm mortars. These can be used to fire smoke shells at various ranges, as well as anti-infantry flechette rounds, and, theoretically, any other manner of mortar round.
Finally, the Mod.3's turret features a second hatch for the gunner, allowing faster escape in the event of an emergency.
The final upgrade to the Mod.3 is it's powertrain. The Mod.3's suspension was upgraded slightly, allowing for easier repair of broken torsion bars. The transmission received a small upgrade, and the engine was reworked to better utilize the latest generation of exhaust cooling systems.
