Lands of Mythron May UC: Forging Defense
About this creation
Here is my entry for the Lands of Mythron May UC. It was a fairly hard build, and I liked the final outcome. I had never made a tree quite that big, and for a first, it turned out great. Thanks for viewing!

Here soldiers prepare for the upcoming invasion in a riverside camp.

Poor blacksmith. Someone thinks that he isn't making the sword perfectly… In his opinion…

Just a simple shot of the river...

Ahh… I love waterfalls...

My pride of this creation….

Credit goes to D. Hensel for that mushroom idea.

The military officer in the easter egg.

Thanks for viewing!

Footnote- Apologies for the bad picture quality. My brothers wanted this beast annihilated… Thus I was unable to wait for daylight for the photographing. Which means bad pictures… Hope you like it anyway...

Wow! Another great build from you, Nathan! :D The landscaping by the river is top-notch, though the grass could use some. That tree is superb, and I'm liking the way the roots creep into the rocks, which are also very nice. That water fall is cool, IMO. The blacksmith oven is a little crude, but ok. Excellent work on this!

Talk about long comments.... XD I love the the waterfall, though I think some blue could have been added since you had blue for the rest of the water. BUT that just a detail. Overall I think Halhi really picked out ever possible problem with you MOC. XD I try to pick out a few but not all. :D

@Halhi: A lot of what you say is true, but I think the trunk of the tree was very good, though if there were rounded on the edges (https://www.flickr.com/photos/71475401@N07/14102088183/in/set-72157644050638970) it'd look better. But I absolutely love those roots! The smoke, maybe not so blocky (this design is fun: http://www.mocpages.com/image_zoom.php?mocid=385992&id=/user_images/103628/1397507968m), but it's still a great MOC Nathan!

Here goes... Like I said, the overall effect of the build is truly fantastic, the colors are wonderful. The water works pretty well too. My first real critique is the waterfall - studs up can look good, but SNOTted (like some of Stephen Boe's waterfalls) can produce a better effect in my opinion. The rockwork is great; it may not be very complex, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Now let's move on to the tree - the overall shaping and proportions look good, but some kind of smoother curve (Kai has a good design, though it can be fragile) might work well to minimize the slightly blocky surface. The leaves - well, you did a good job of avoiding the common problem of putting them all on one level, but some angled ones (with bars and clips, or something like that) might look nice. The plants around the tree are pretty nice - I personally try to cover the hollow studs in the bamboo leaves when possible. My favorite ways of doing this are either putting a 1x1 green plate on top or positioning one of the big three-leaved plants so that the hollow stud is mostly covered. That's a relatively minor issue though. Speaking of plants, I think the whole MOC could use more of them - remember, there was nobody trimming anything back in the medieval times, so foliage should generally be pretty dense. I understand if the lack of them is for piece count issues, though; I have the same problem. I think the path is probably the biggest problem with the build; the colors look a tad bit messy, and sticking to one, or maybe two, colors would make it look cleaner and fit in with the rest of the build. The riverbank was a similar problem - I've never really been fond of the dark tan +brown color combo. I know some people that do like it though, so maybe it's just a matter of opinion. Anyway, my personal favorite design for riverbanks is a randomly mixed bunch of 1x2 plates in dark tan, light tan, light grey, and dark grey - I found these colors look really nice when mixed. The forge looks fantastic overall - the textures look great, and the cameo was pretty funny :P My only bit of advice here is that SNOTted smoke might look better. I'm not very good at it, but Deus Otiosus is pretty skilled with it. Now that I'm done critiquing the details, I have a few last bits of advice for the entire MOC - it's generally best to have some sort of structure acting as a back wall for the MOC, usually a building or two works well. This can minimize the amount of background in your pictures and maximize the amount of Lego in them, as well as add a wider range of techniques. Finally, again taking a note from Gilbert, it can often be a good idea to make your MOC with the intention of being viewed from just one angle - then you can conserve pieces and make either a larger MOC or one with more techniques. Anyway, enough rambling - great MOC, and good luck in the challenge!
