The idea with this page is to keep something of a journal for the construction of my first large scale MOC, General Grievous' Invisible Hand.

Looking at others' creations, I often find myself wondering how long it took, how difficult it might have actually been, and the steps involved. So I thought it might be fun to post some "progress reports" as this lengthy, and expensive creation trudges along...we'll see if I survive the process! (Also, there's always the hope that it may serve as a personal reminder to me never to attempt something so ludicrisly elaborate and difficult ever again. Although I tend not to listen to myself when stirred by some creative delusion of grandure!

So anyway, here goes a bold attempt at what may amount to nothin'. But then again, as Ferris Bueller said..."Only the meek get pinched. The bold survive!"

Well, as those who've kindly followed my rantings can tell you, it's been ages since my last entry. The summer was dominated by work. But, thanks to a little shove by several of you who sent emails, I'v been awoken to the fact that my wife and job are secondary, and it's time to get my #*%! priorities in order!

So progress began anew a few days ago, and although this entry aint pretty, I thought you might enjoy hearing about and seeing some of the ABSOLUTE HELL this monstrosity has put me through recently. "It's all fun and games until someone tries to build a dome!"...you'll see what I mean...

So the arrows here are pointing to the start of a trip to the seventh level of lego Hell! It seemed simple enough...I just needed to finish out the very front of the black central section that runs the length of the ship. HOWEVER...the problem was that the bricks needed to be pushed upward into place, which caused a break in the front end's interior skeletal structure...which also caused me to, as Ralphie in "A Christmas Story" puts it, let out a stream of swear words that "to this day is still hanging somewhere over Lake Michigan!!"

Anyway, that in turn meant the entire top half of the whole ship had to be removed in order to get to those few separated bricks. After essentially disassembling half of the vessel, I promptly glued the supports back into place, and re-assembled the ship. What a pain in the a$$!!!!!!!!!...

ADDENDUM: October 10 - After a few comments from others about the issue of glueing parts, I thought I should mention the reason for doing so is that I hope to exhibit the ship once finished. While glue certainly wasn't necessary for ordinary display, I wanted the moc to hold up during transportation, and thus reinforced it by gluing four 2x2 hinge plates (two on each side). May the Lego Gods forgive me!

Meanwhile, for months now I've been struggling with a way of making a convincing dome shape from plates (to fit with the rest of the models look), and what you see here is my most successful prototype...

Thanks to countless hinge plates and wedges, I've finally got a combination of pieces that seem to fit the appearance of the rest of the moc, are structurally sound, and fit together with very few gaps...

This prototype is still a little large and doesn't contain all of the bends that will eventually be necessary, but it's decent enough here to give me an idea of what things should eventually look like as I move toward tackling the aft section (which is going to be the most challenging part!!!)...

I also threw in this shot of the ventral section in progress. Here the white "thingy" (another technical term we artists like to use!) forms the skeleton and support for the black hinged plates, which will be the outer hull portion of the belly. I think I used 1,756,509 hinges...or something like that. Whatever the count, all I can say is thank God for Bricklink!!!

So that's about it for now. I'll do my best to try to keep updates a bit more consistently. Things like making money...spouses...sleep...they're all way over-rated anyway!

Thanks, as always, for checking in. Later, Mark

This journal is top notch...certainly better than having your eye gouged out with a rusty spoon by a 2nd year intern at 3 in the morning. I hope we can meet at a convention some time. I'll say it again, this is simply amazing.

I've kind of been waiting for the final entry, but what the heck. Outstanding work here Mark...the texture effect you've achieved with the tiles is fabulous. It really does look more like a movie prop than Lego. I can't wait to see it completed. OK, now stop fooling around and get back to work...it's not going to build it self you know. ;-)

I'm a bit late on this, sorry. While the glueing is definitely upsetting the quality of this is still outstanding. I'm glad to see it's progressing and I can only invision in my head what it will look like when it's done. You've done a great job with the dome part to the second half...I can't wait to see the final of that. Excelent work!

Glue? GLUE?!!! Blasphemy! Heresy! Sacrilege! Mr. Kelso, I respect your building skills enough to find that very disillusioning. But it's all right -- you'll get what you deserve when at some point down the line you find that you again need to disassemble that section you glued. It's inevitable, you know...

I'm Glad to see you're at it again - it sounds like some others emailed you as well...ah, peer pressure! I'll look forward to seeing what you do with the back end. The front half's looking great! Don't give up...must (cough!)...keep (wheeze!)...building!

Alright! He's back! These journal entries always make me weak at the knees dude. Seriously! Great to see you're continuing the monstrosity. As magnificent as the finished ship will be, I'll actually feel a little sad that it's all over. In the meantime, let me paraphrase Monty Burns: "I'll keep it short and sweet -- Family. Religion. Friendship. These are the three demons you must slay if you wish to succeed in Lego."

Coming together very nicely. I had to laugh out loud at your gluing pieces together - I just about did that with my mech that kept losing its legs. It was only its temporary existence that prevented me from doing so. This model, I imagine, will stay together for a very long time. Good to see you back. Lee.

Are you at a standstill? It just seems as if it's coming along more slowly that the 1-2 transition. I'm excited to see the outcome of this behemoth. Good luck!

I've been following along with this project for a while now and I've gotta say it's just amazing. I just know the finished version will be a masterpiece. That's some true dedication there to be working on this for so long.

I'm not sure what amazes me more, the model itself or your sheer determination to complete this beast. Please, don't give up.
