The Sweat and Tears in a Single Bite of Chocolate
About this creation
Presenting my first ever build that fills the whole picture with only Lego... "The Sweat and Tears in a Single Bite of Chocolate."

This is my entry for Mike Doyle's Beautiful Lego 2: Dark Contest. I hope it is not hard to tell what it shows, but just in case it is, it shows a bar of chocolate with a bite taken out of it on a table under a black and white picture of a crying eye, with a candle at the edge of a table, all in front of a white wall.

I have got to say, I am worried that it does not represent the overall theme of Dark all too well, but I worked on it too long not to enter it, so I am entering it anyways...

Now, some detail shots.

The Candle. Credit for the Technique used goes to Kai Bernstein.

The Chocolate.

The Mosaic of the crying eye, which was really hard to manage. In the end, I had to resort to cut Flex Tubing two places after encountering difficulties with the overall shape of the Mosaic.

And the main picture unedited. Yes, I know, it does not look particularly dark, but I had hoped that a little editing (in the main picture) might give it a darker feel.
Note: The older bricks I put in the wall were put there on purpose to make the appearance of stains.

Gilbert asked for an explanation of the meaning of the title, "The Sweat and Tears in a Single Bite of Chocolate." It has (yes, you were right, Gilbert) to do with bad working conditions in countries producing Cocoa. Child labor and such. It is a very dark aspect of society; that we enjoy things others have labored for without giving it a second thought.

Well, this is my largest good Moc on the 'pages to date, as well as my most time consuming, taking about three weeks. In fact, I focused on this Moc so hard that I stopped even checking on Mocpages for a week (a huge deal for me, if not for most others). I dismissed all other projects, even the school ones that could wait, to get this completed, and I think it was an effort well spent. I know that this might not have much of a chance, even with appropriate editing, just because it doesn't look very dark (gloomy if anything), but I still think this is one of my very best works so far.

I hope you liked it!

Quoting Connor Lucero The shape of that eye is just amazing! And of the letters within the chocolate bar wrapper too! Great work!
The letters of the chocolate wrapper were a lot harder to make than the eye pressure-wise... Some parts of the eye fall out at the slightest disturbance.

Quoting Professor B. I'm impressed! What Gilbert said. You're a master at cheese mosaics!
I actually ran out of light bley slopes while making the Mosaic. I had to borrow some from what little Lego my sister owns (I'm lucky she had any at all). But honestly, working with cheese isn't that hard...

Quoting A M This is amazing! I can't speak for Mr. Doyle, but if it were up to me, this would be in the book in a second. Everything here is perfectly built and the picture is stunningly composed!
I certainly hope so... Thanks! :D

Quoting Tim S Fantastic job! The mosaic is beautiful and its symbolism cuts to the core of the true dark side of chocolate. Well done with both your construction, composition and entire work of art!
I am getting so many great comments from builders I really admire (including you)... I have never gotten a response this good before. Thank you everyone for your great comments; every one of them made me very, very happy. :D

Quoting Alexander Solzhenitsyn It's very well built, but I kinda don't get it. To me, it just looks like a picture of crying, a candle, and chocolate. However, if you want to eat your chocolate in good conscience, buy it from South America, or from Fair Trade. Yes, it costs a fortune, but you either care or you don't.
I see how it can be confusing. :P It started out with just the chocolate, to make it fit the category, and then I added in the eye to give it the title "The Sweat and Tears in a Single Bite of Chocolate." The title is supposed to remind the poor working conditions of people who are harvesting the cocoa. The candle was just a bit of an afterthought to give it an extra color, because otherwise it would look to bland (only grays and browns). ;)

look, I'm not a judge, but this entry fits perfectly! I've studied the exploitation of the poor child workers who harvest the cocao plants, and it is a very dark side of chocolate... great entry!

Quoting Ben King It seems to me like the best and most detailed part of this is the eye picture, and it sort of steals the focus from the chocolate. With that said, great moc! I hope this makes it into the book, regardless that it may not fit the category perfectly, because it's really good.
I had that concern about the eye stealing focus from the chocolate. I have several pictures of the whole thing with the chocolate in focus and the Mosaic in the background, but I didn't put them in the post...

Quoting Gilbert Despathens You are a master of cheese. Good thinking with the tubing. Now, what do you mean about the sweat and tears? Poor labor conditions on cocoa plantations? A brief explanation of the symbolism might help sway judges.
I will do that immediately. Thanks for telling me. :D
