Ranger Mk 1
The Ranger Mk 1 is a space recon and atmospheric drop vessel.
About this creation
Thank you for checking out my LEGO creation! The Ranger is a space recon and atmospheric drop-ship. I had envisioned the design after working on some other models using the bi-level wing piece that came in the old Exploriens sets. So I eventually built the Ranger over a weekend in April 2014, centering the design around the wing pieces. The design blended different sci-fi inspirations like Star Trek, Aliens, Star Blazers and Battlestar Galactica.

A semi-profile view of the Ranger from the front port side.

Head-on view.

Semi-profile "beauty" view from the starboard side.

Side view isn't as flattering but highlights the massive engines.

Rear view showing some of the engine detail. I used 3 x 3 Technic disks on the engines to create the "vented" look.

Tail view of the angled stabilizers.

Top view shows a lot of the subtle detail on top.

Head-on view from below.

Some underside detail.

Another angle of the underside detail.

Rear view with the loading ramp down.

A view from thru the loading hatch.

Inside the passenger cabin.

View facing the exit of the passenger cabin.

The Ranger has some defensive weapon capability, including ventral laser cannons.

A close-up view of the command cabin.

Pilot and craft.

All true space builders understand how essential "whooshing" is to quality control.

Whoosh!

Very nice clean design. Great colour theme. Well made engine nacelles. My fav section of your ship are the back wings. Really like them. They fit perfectly in to your design idea. Keep up this great work!

Great to see you mention Battlestar Gallactica in the description cause that was the first thing I thought of with this one, the windscreen and body styling scream BG!

This kind of thing would be a dream come true were Lego to re-boot the classic space them. So swooshable and sleek!

Quoting Alex Sonny This is so smooth! The white and red go so well together, especially with the smooth angular lines of the ship. The print on the cockpit adds a lot to the overall look as it doesn't break up the white. This is just so amazing, especially because it uses so many old parts.
Thanks!

Quoting Mark Kelso Nice, Dan! Those wing elements are really unique and effective parts that help to separate this from MOCs with "boiler plate" syndrome. Great color blocking, and the design gets a high score on the ol' swoosh-O-meter - particularly love the tail section.
Thanks Mark. The elements came together nicely on this one. The tail was the final touch and followed the basic design of a similar model--the Stinger. In this case I tried to give it a more retro feel with the "space wall" panels as the stabilizers.

Quoting Jet Best WOW! When I saw the first picture it didn't look like it was even Lego! A superb ship, well done!
Thanks. I think part of that "is that Lego?" effect has to do with the Exploriens bi-level wing piece which hardly gets used.

Quoting matt rowntRee Always envisioned using those wing elements in a similar fashion, just couldn't get them to combine in such an elegant way. It kinda reminds me of the BTA fighters from Enemy Mine. Love the large engine pods on the wings. What is that cone piece on the belly? Never seen one at that angle. Excellent!
That's a 5 x 5 Scala dish on the underside.

Quoting Michael Rutherford Mr. Jassim, all kinds of slick! The robust duel stabilizers and heavy forward section of the fuselage evoke the drop ship from Aliens. I really like your treatment of the engines as well. The way you stretch them and address both the ram cone on the front and the afterburner on the back. They suggest all the raw power needed to push this thing across the sky in a hurry. I would say that you have exploited that white Explorian plate up on the nose section to the utmost. All of that AND a cargo compartment. Who doesn’t love a cargo compartment! As always, well done and well presented. Attack!
Thanks! That bi-level wing piece doesn't show up in many MOCs. It was a fun challenge incorporating it into this design.

incredible that there's a "passenger cabin"! man, you did a good job here because any model using those "bi-level wing pieces" as a centerpiece is worthy of praise. they HAVE TO BE the focus-point of an MOC cause they have almost no use anywhereeeee else -_-

Absolutely brilliant. I've always considered how I could use these parts with the rotors. Your solution is perfect. The ship has become wonderful. The rear I really like. The colors also go very well.
