Classic Space - Shore Leave
We all know that the spacemen of Classic Space were continuously busy with driving rovers, flying spaceships, launching rockets and detecting things. Why? Well we never found out. But what did they do in their spare time? Archive photos have recently discovered which provide a fascinating insight into the off-duty lives of spacemen.
About this creation

Many spacemen enjoyed flying in their time off, as well as at work. Some took up hang gliding but others preferred an even smaller scale. The Classic Space Radio Control Club was a popular place for spacemen to compare their latest creations and fly, drive or race them. In this photo are two large scale model spaceships and a model of the 888 "Great Big Radar Truck". This is the only record of this vehicle, which is even absent from the Brickset database.

The Classic Space Model Rocket Club had just one member, who liked to hear things go bang.

For stress relief, there was nothing better than battering a Blacktron UFO piņata to express the frustrations of continuously being happy, smiling, waving etc. The use of laser pistols was generally discouraged.

Spacemen would get some time off, even when in outer space. Fishing was a popular pastime as unlike on Earth, it never rained. You could also turn the radio off on your space-helmet prevent you from hearing if anybody asked, "Are they biting today?". Best of all there was absolutely no chance of catching a fish, which would inevitably interrupt the monotony when angling on Earth.

MOCpages has mangles these pictures quite a bit. You can view them more clearly on my Flickr account.

A big "Thank you" to everyone who commented on the CS Hang Glider and especially the ones who started to speculate about what spacemen did in their free time. I'd love it if other people created some builds on this theme too.

Quoting Scott Bertaut Lol! Reminds me of a recent town and train display I helped with at my local LUG. I wanted a way to put all my mini scale cars and planes in the layout so I just made them RC with Minifigs standing around with remotes! That "model rocket club" looks more like a fireworks club if he likes things that go bang.
I agree, it's a great way to present micro builds and fun too. Erm, yes, the sole member of the "model rocket club" had his bushy eyebrows burnt off in the latest explosion. He said that it was "Awesome!!".

Quoting Marc dZ The idea of micro-ships is one of the most brilliant I've seen over these last years. Terrific!! Simplicity is sometimes the most efficient.
Thank you! Have a look at this CS micro ship on Flickr too: https://www.flickr.com/photos/karenleahquinn/13760179013/

Quoting Stuart Lucas Oh yes. I'm glad my offhand comment inspired this bout of whimsical amusement! You have to love all the scenes here, but the space angling got me hook, line & sinker (ba-dum, cha!) Great stuff as ever!
Your comment was just such an obvious opportunity for some CS fun and silliness. It just had to be done and thanks for sparking off this train of thought :)

What a great idea for next year. I might dabble beforehand of course. CS golf might rival CS angling; what the golf cart looks like is anyone's guess.

Quoting David Alexander Smith I never knew that those spacemen could have so much fun. The RC scene steals the show, but am loving it all.
I wonder if this could be the theme for next year's Pocket Money Contest? "What do spacemen do in their free time?" I still love your spaceman playing the drums: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/323931

Quoting Topsy Creatori (StoveTopCreator!) Those guys shore know how to have fun! My favorite is the pinata and maracas action! :)
Thank you! I download a file of all of the collectable minifigs from here: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=80530 It's got all sorts of decorations and accessories that aren't in "normal" LDD and has inspired me to play!

Quoting Commander Cold Hehe, sounds good! How do you get such good renderings out of LDD?
I've finally worked out how to use the lighting controls properly. Decide which angle (left, right or top) will light your model best and set that to 100%. Set the others to 5%, unless you're going to end up with a dark patch that hides details. If that's the case turn one up to 10%. You might want to use the camera light at 5% to avoid dark or shaded areas but don't use it at too high a percentage as it doesn't have a "shadow" option and it blurs things. This also applies to the ambient light option, which I've stopped using. Have a look at this: http://ldd2povray.lddtools.com/index.php?p=2_9_Lights-and-shadows

Quoting Commander Cold Maybe I should explore what Ice Planet Astronauts do in their time.....
Yes do, definitely! Perhaps all of that sawing through the ice was to get to a good fishing hole?

Quoting matt rowntRee Space angling AND piņatas? Now that's what I call a relaxing vacation! Love the RC ships, and who doesn't enjoy things that go BOOOM!?! Still laughing at the no possibility of catching a fish to interrupt the fishing. Only a true angler would understand that. ;) FISH ON!
Thank you! I'm not an angler but I've always suspected that the fish rather got in the way of what it was really about.

Thank you! I made the custom decorations from a CS logo on a Google Image Search and then by adding text in Photoshop. Here's how to add the custom decorations using LDD2POVray: https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidroberts01341/13498577504/
