Tupolev Tu-22M3 BACKFIRE-C
After years of admiring Mad Physicist (Ralph S) and his model building, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Now, the Tu-22 Backfire is one of my all-time favorite Bombers and Airplanes. Still, my first choice was the Tu-95MS. It was a friend of mine, who thought that a model of the Tu-95 would look to much like Ralph's B-52, that made me change my mind. After a few months of collecting bricks and figuring out the right ways of connecting the bricks, this is the result!
About this creation
I had to fine-tune the cockpit quite a few times. In the end I still managed to put in 4 ejector seats, an instrument panel and control sticks.
Building the landing gear itself was pretty straight forward and therefore easy. The tricky part was to fit the main landing gear into the wing section with the variable-geometry wings and into the mid fuselage section with the bomb bay while keeping the whole construction sturdy.
I decides to add two KH-22 "Kitchen" Anti-Ship missiles. I think they add a lot of detail to the model and therefore make the model look even better.

The variable-geometry wings were another challenge. They are quite big and had to be flat. Next to that, I just HAD to add the necessary detail to the wings: not adding the flaps and spoilers was not an option ;)
Because of that, they bend a lot when at 20 degrees sweep.

I have more photo's of the model and the WIP on my flickr account:

Quoting Roy Bailey I understand, it would have to be taken apart and put back together, which would be very hard I'm guessing just by its sheer size... Either way, I still like the model, and by the way, I'm going to try to make a B-17 again. (I made one earlier but the lxf file was deleted before I could post it.)
I do have some WIP photos, but I don't think they'll show much. I have them on my Flickr page (Kenneth-V). And as for taking it apart, that's indeed no option. Looking forward to seeing your B-17. I'm currently working on a C-47. My LDD screenshots are already on my page ;)

Quoting Roy Bailey Have any instructions for this? if they are not in LDD or LDRAW, but a series of photographs or an .obj file, I can still work with that, but either way, Very good model! I'm Stunned too! The highest quality TU-22 I've seen yet...Oh, wait, this is the FIRST one I have seen...lol...
No, I'm sorry but I did the whole model from a printed 3 view and many airliners.net pictures, so no LDD or LDraw instructions.

Quoting Henrik Jensen A truly impressive aircraft. The picture quality here is not particularly good, so I've seen your photos on Flickr. It is an incredibly accurate model you have created, and I am really pleased that its not a CAD model (there are too many of those CAD-models here on the pages), so Im sure you have struggled hard to make it all stick together. It all looks very much to be created by a talented modeler, so it amazes me that I can only find this model on your pages, it is certainly no beginner model.
Thank you for your feedback. Although it looks like a pro model, it is in fact my first and only model to date. I did a lot of research and watched Ralph S carefully as he built his models. Thats my background experience really. The reason that it is my only model is that I only recently started to buy lego parts focusing on airplane MOCs. Next to that, I wasn't so eager as to put my LDD models and this one on the Internet at first. It was in fact Ralph S himself who convinced me otherwise. Still, the first is always the hardest they say... So in time I will definitely build more models! And as for the photo's: I'm looking for a place to make some more pro shots of the model. For the time being, you all will have to do with these.

Quoting P. Voranc Wonderful job, this is one of the best LEGO bombers in the internet sky, and I've seen a lot of them. I love the mixed stud-snot look, and I seriously doubt that you could improve this build in any way, I love the cockpit and anti-ship missiles. Tear it apart or get more pieces, because fellow airplane builders are eager to see more from you. Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! I certainly am planning on making more! Next up, another challenging project: the B-2A Spirit 1:36. I hope I will be able to construct one of same quality as the Tu-22.
