Skull
A life-size sculpture.
About this creation
This MOC is for Mike's Doyle's contest. Mike, I just saw the themes you were looking for and so I don't have much expectations, but I post it anyway if you don't mind. Your input would be gladly welcome!

This skull is built using a "SNOT with studs" technique. There is a (gray) inner core on which the four sides are clipped. The top and bottom sections are built the regular way. The toughest parts were the lower jaw, the ears area and the temples area.
The candle was a last minute addition.

Lift up your head!

I just couldn't resist!

"To build or not to build, that is the question..."

Well, I wouldn't have said it better!

Quoting Tim C This is wonderful, Tom. You utilized the Lowell technique wonderfully for this build, and I think the use of the tiles for the teeth was a subtle yet immeasurably effective move. Adding the melted candle to the ensemble just sets the whole thing off. Really appreciate that last shot as well. Superb work.
Thank you very much! I didn't know Bruce Lowell (nor his sphere, obviously), he's a great builder!

Quoting Iain Marsh Great work. I think the studs add tothe "roundness" of a skull, SNOT might have made it too bland and un-Lego like.
Totally agreed!

excellent, I often wonder if builder's use programs for such build's, it is refreshing to know they don't. a great build, I can only imagine what it would look like in trans clear bricks.

Quoting Ben King Wow! This is so realistic. It's looks really great. Where did you start, in the middle or with a specific outer place like the chin?
I started with a drawing, and then built the middle, an ugly box with studs on each side. Then I built the forehead to warm up, and it spread from there : eye-sockets, nose, temples, cheekbones, sides, front teeth and chin, jaw. After all that, building the rest was much easier!...

Quoting MCLegoboy ! All it needed where one stud-wide holes in each eye for the optic nerves, but that probably looked really weird, so great job!
I thought about that... Since the skull is not hollow, it would have been a bit weird. That's also why the bottom of the nose hole is tiled with black.
