MocAthalon 2014 - Bowie Bust
About this creation
Team: Gentlemen of the Brick

Catagory: 30: Youíre Busted!

Build a bust! No, not someone getting arrested, Iím talking about a statue from the shoulder up! It can be a real person or a fictional character but it must be ďlife sized.Ē

2014 Mocathalon home

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Man, was this catagory hard... special thanks to whoever thought this catagory up, i had a blast and wow, was i stretched as well! :P
It was my partner who actually suggested i make a bust of David Bowie as she is a huge fan - initally i was dubious but then when i recalled the classic "Aladdin Sane" album cover, i thought, could i actually pull off that lightening bolt across his face? I didn't know.. and there was only one way to find out! ;)
I had a hard time photographing this with all the brick shine - i knew i wanted some white background shots to recreate the album cover, but i actually thought it would pop better on black and give viewers a better idea of the sculpting involved. So, here is a full revoloution of Bowie on black.
The side on angles were the least flattering and showed where i struggled the most with the anatomy. The face is far too flat and you can see how enlongated the head is. But hey, the Ziggy Stardust character is a kind of alien, right? (Ok, just covering my failings i know!)
He really did have an epic mullet. Business on top, party at the back! :)
C and C welcome as always. Thanks for looking peeps! :)
Quoting Greyson Beights I'm all with Chris on this. You would have definitely received perfect scores. Thanks for participating in this year's games -it is always a joy to see what you come up with.
Thanks so much Greyson, your kind words are much appreciated. Thankyou (and please pass on my thanks to the others too) for doing such a great job with the judging, 300 entries over a month is a huge undertaking and i applaud all your hard work! :)
Quoting Chris Phipson You said above "thank you to whoever came up with this category" and to that I have to say NO, THANK YOU! This was my category and I think you TOTALLY blew it out of the water! As you know, your entry didn't make the cutoff. I don't think I've ever been more upset over an entry not making it before. Your builds have always made me sit up and take notice and this piece of art just blew me away! Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us. And yes, rest assured that this would have gotten you an EASY perfect score from all the judges had it made the time. All that side, seriously... thank you for posting this. ~Chris.
Aw thanks heaps Chris, it was a killer catagory and i'm dead chuffed to hear that you reckon i hit the mark. :) I enjoyed seeing some really hard catagories this year - the Rube Goldberg machine also piqued my interest although i didn't get to do that one - i'm actually considering having a go at some of the catagories i didn't get to throughout the year as i'm sad i missed out on them! Thanks again for putting so much effort into such a great comp, i've enjoyed every minute of it. :)
Quoting The Timinater ! excellent! you've done our team and yourself proud :)
Thanks Timinator, hope to see you again in the MOcA's next year mate! :)
Quoting Elk Guard Amazing work!
Thanks! :)
Quoting Tim C Wonderful, Gabriel. Instantly recognizable. The different contours of a human face is nigh impossible to recreate from LEGO, but you have certainly taken a bold swing at it here. Frankly, I think it would be tough to do better. The lightning bolt on the face was very well achieved. My favorite part is definitely the hair. Obviously, that bolt is what will make the viewer say, "Well, of course, Ziggy Stardust." But the hair contributes at least as much to that illusion. Top notch work and best of luck in the MocAthalon.
Thankyou Tim for your kind and encouraging words! You know, i'm not sure that it is impossible, especially not if you scale up appropriately, but it certainly is a heck of a challenge. It's something that i'm sure i will have another go at sometime, just to see if i can get any closer to realism if nothing else. :)
Quoting David Alexander Smith Hey, you didn't need the judges to tell you this is a straight 5 build. BTW I fell for exactly the same trap last year. I actually had a build up and ready to add to the MocAthalon group. I thought I'd wait for some feedback before adding, then doh!, I missed the deadline. Anyway now all you need to do is build all the other Bowie incarnations, Thin White Duke next?
*All* the other Bowie personas? Holy cow, i'd be going til the end of time, haha! Maybe i'll just sucker my sweetie into doing the next one. "Go on, it's really easy. i promise!" ;) Ah well, now that it's all over, i can go and have a lesuirely look thru all the other entries. Yay!
Quoting Starscream Soundwave Wow! This is so good. I recognised him straight away - although having said that, you'd have a hard time not recognising David Bowie!
Thankyou! You know, on the topic of recognisability (?), i found it interesting how looking at the sculpture at different angles seemed to change the expression on his face? And again, the flattening of the image into photos seemed to subtly change it again - it really brings home to me how important it is to experience models "in the brick" - images can only take you so far. Thanks again for your comment!
Quoting Topsy Creatori (StoveTopCreator!) Phenomenal!!! :)
Cheers Stove top creator! :)
Quoting matt rowntRee Gabriel, it's builds like this that are going to force the judges to change the scoring system to larger numbers. This is way beyond outstanding and a study that I will CERTAINLY come back to and reference for sheer skill and daring. Plus, it's Bowie! Your sculpting is phenomenal in spite of your critique on his flatness on his face. From the album cover, what more could you hope for? This is a stellar achievement regardless of the deadline. Highly impressive!
Thankyou so much for your kind words Matt! :) Personally, i am fine with the scoring as it stands - judging is a hard enough job already without making the process more complicated, especially given the huge number of entries they have to deal with. Part of my problem when it comes to comps like this is time management - when i get stuck into a project i tend to get tunnel vision and lose track of the bigger picture until i re-emerge at the other end... where i realise that i've made something much too elaborate and don't have time to make anything else, haha! I think there is a lot of virtue in simplicity of build design and that's something i have a hard time getting a handle on. Thanks again! :)
Quoting Flare . Nice work!
Thankyou Flare! :)
Quoting XY EZ David Bowie!!!! Superb!!!! I love it!! I hope you win!5/5
Quoting Cheryl P I'm commenting again. Don't feel bad. I'm finding with these contests that the quality level is dropping. Builders are saying "I'm rushed, I'm stressed". That's why I don't participate in contests. Lego building is suppose to be fun and challenging at the same time. The builder sets the rules.
Oh hey, i'm not feeling bad at all! I wasn't seriously in the MocAthalon to win or anything, i was just in it for the fun of it - the combination of a deadline and a build catagory i wouldn't normally go for is an exciting kind of pressure! I wish i was better at building to the time constraints, but so far 6 quality builds in 30 days has proven beyond me. Perhaps next year. Thankyou for your very kind comments though, and i'm certainly gratified that you've come back for a second look! :) ps. My cat just saw the bust on the coffee table in the lounge room and got a fright! First time he's been freaked out by one of my mocs, even the Technic motorised excavator set didn't faze him. It must be convincing, to him at least! xD
Quoting Yuri Fassio Fantastic :)
Thankyou! :)
Quoting Giovanni & Lennaert Seynhaeve Never mind the rules, they tend to limit creativity. Awesome work Gabriel, well played!
Quoting David Alexander Smith I think this could be the best bust I've seen. It really is Bowie. The bolt must have been a real nightmare to get right. Great work though! You must be gutted you missed the deadline though.
Oh dear, i missed the deadline? :o For some reason i thought it was the 31st, silly me for not reading the rules. Ah well. Thanks for the kind words though David, i've never tried a bust before so it's very gratifying to hear that you think i hit the mark. I certainly learnt lots that i can put into practice next time! :)
