>>PROJECT 12<< EXO-FORCE / 2014 Mocathlon: Under the Sea
About this creation
For the 2014 Mocathlon.
Team - Team BrickLock!
Category - Under the sea: Whether its fish submarines or underwater landscapes; build us something that is under the sea. (Someone please build a Kraken!)

This is also the March build for my yearlong project, PROJECT 12. >>PROJECT 12<< works like this: For each month, I make a MOC based on a non-licensed theme by Lego. You can join the PROJECT 12 Group and vote, each month, for which theme the next Moc should be based on. It is as simple as that. For March, the chosen theme was EXO-FORCE. And I thought, the EXO-FORCE machines have walked, flown, and even climbed... but they haven't swam. So here it is.

***

"The flood came suddenly. Seemingly out of nowhere. We were not ready for it at all. One day there was no water, the next it reached to the doorstep of the Golden City. And it continues to rise, steadily. Nobody knows how it happened. And we will never find out. Because right now, we have other things to care about.
"The Robots learned to take advantage of the water within the first weeks. The Robots were all made water resistant, and their first under-water machines came within half a month. We had no way to defend ourselves. Not from the water, and not from the robots that came through it. We gave up the Golden City.
"It has been two years now. We have underwater machines, too, but the Robots are many. Only about half the humans escaped their first underwater attack, when the water first came. We have been pushed back to the opposite side of Sentai Mountain. The hopes of rescuing the human prisoners of the robots are bleaker than ever. But we are not defeated yet... we are still fighting. And we will fight back as long and as hard as it takes to get back all of the prisoners from the Robots." ~Ryo

Here is the newest addition to the batch of EXO-FORCE Machines: The Blade Warrior. It is piloted by Ryo. It is armed with two shoulder cannons, two electric blades, and big feet for stomping. The robots are employing a useful technique here: Swarming. But I don't think they have a chance...

Here is the same setup again with a white background.

The Blade Warrior by itself. The Mech is (obviously) the main point of this Moc. I decided on the color scheme in part because EXO-FORCE had only one more vote than Aqua Raiders. so I thought I should work at least a little Aqua Raiders in there. Plus, of course, I needed to fit it into a Mocathlon category, and Yellow gives it that underwater feel I needed. It also has a story-purpose: The Bladed Warrior was colored yellow so that it could be seen underwater clearly by all the other EXO-FORCE members and avoid being hit by their weapons. And it pulls attention away from the more stealthy machines...

Posability! It is hard to balance this thing, but once you get it balanced, it is very stable. It does not have a knee-joint, but otherwise it is flexible just as a human is.

The feet. I really want to pull that hair out of the picture...

The legs. No knee joint, but it still moves just fine.

Cockpit. I love this shape... The curvy pieces besides the windscreen are at an angle, so that they fit the windscreen. I never liked the Lego series for four-year-old kids back in 2005 or so (with the larger figures), but I'm happy that series gave me the windscreen.

Shoulder joint. I don't particularly like the shoulders, but they look better with those yellow thingies than without any yellow at all.

The blade. I am happy with that.

And the turbine/gun, my favorite part of the build!

I think it looks even better from behind.

I am not very fond of the back of the cockpit. But the gaps that you see are on purpose.

See why now? The back looks OK from the top, and the gaps give an interesting texture.

The inside of the cockpit! One thing I wanted to change from Lego's normal machine design was to make the cockpit without any studs showing... success!!!

For those who didn't believe me when I said that the curves at the front were at an angle.

The Rocks! They were very hard to pull off, even with all those gaps that I left.

The back of the rocks. Not pretty, but not visible in the main picture either, so it's fine.

Robots! I discovered that you can fit a rod into some of the holes on the backs of those robots, and gave them some sort of jetpack.

Robot says Bye!

Well, that's about it... If you have any criticism, anything at all, tell me in the comments. I can take it. Also, a note to the judges: I hope the writing on the main picture is OK. I saw other people do it before, and you didn't say anything, and I even asked in the questions thread. But this is the latest I can post this creation (visit to my Grandparents), and since there was no answer yet (which is understandable), I just decided to include the logos for more authenticity.

I hope you enjoyed it, and don't forget to check out PROJECT 12!

PS: This is also my 50th Creation here on the pages! Woohoo!

Ah yes, Exo-Force. I really liked this theme...I think that you did a decent job of capturing that unique theme.

Quoting Halhi 141 So, here's the rundown on the mech. The colors are probably the strong point, they're very eye-catching. I'll go over the rest from bottom up:
Quoting The Legs
The legs might be my least favorite bit of the mech. The feet look too blocky and simple, the width of the legs themselves is too jarring in contrast to the thinness elsewhere, and the poseability isn't the greatest.
Quoting The Body
This is obviously the strong point of the mech. The shaping is nice, the techniques are good, and the textures are pretty good. My only complaint is that the cockpit is too rectangular (on the sides) in contrast with the curvy shape of the rest, maybe a different piece would look better.
Quoting the Arms
I'm not fond of the way you connected the arms to the body; like some parts of the legs, it's just too thin. The rest of the arms honestly seem a bit awkward. The weapons are great, though.
Quoting Finishing Thoughts
Overall the look of the mech is pretty good, aside from the skinny look, but it needs way more greebling. My general rule of thumb is that making something overdetailed is better than underdetailed, and while there's some people (Lindel) that tend to make overdetailed MOC, the vast majority of people make underdetailed and overally clean MOCs. Adding some more greebling, maybe some in dark grey and some in yellow would add a lot. Anyway, I've looked at this long enough - time to move on with my life, and I hope my two critiques were helpful.
Thanks for the detailed rundown! :D I agree about the arms and legs. I see what you mean with the slightly boxy cockpit, too, although I hadn't noticed it before. The greebles are an interesting point, although I am not sure if they would be at home in a mech from EXO-FORCE... the sets from that line had greebles mostly in stickers. And yes, your critiques were most certainly helpful. ;)

Quoting Stormjay Rider It's missing the thin, more humanoid look that the official EXO Force sets have... but it looks alright outside of the theme.
I thought about that a lot, and almost changed it, but a thinner cockpit would not be suited for underwater (the air would get In for most designs). I agree it looks a little strange.

Quoting Stephan N the sneaker (remind me feet) look cool.
It needed big feet for balance issues... But, if you think about it, it would also need big feet to swim. So it fits more than you'd think. They do look like sneakers though. :P
