Category: Serfs up!
Build a creation with a focus on the serfs in a medieval setting. What did these people do with their time aside from collecting muck? No size restrictions.

Now is the time for the final joust of this year’s Tourney! It was a great honor for Rego to be one chosen as one of the two competitors, the other being Sir Galvin of Mythron.

So on the day of the event hundreds of people (and other beings) gathered to witness the grand finale, two skilled jousters is a sight to behold. Many serfs and servants have been given the day off, as the day of the event has been declared a holiday. Even the sun seems to be leaning over the audience to watch the games, which are being held just outside the walls of Carthal, in Ared-Narcholath (the doorless tower in the common-speak). Ared-Narcholath is a tower built by the great elves of old, said to be door-less to contain the soul of an evil, powerful sorcerer’s body. The sorcerer was a great warlord, said to have almost gained control of all Mythron before he was defeated by the elves. His armor and axe-staff are displayed on a statue on top of the tower, which now watches over the games.

The lower levels of Ared-Narcholath.

What’s this?! One of Rego’s men seems to be stealing the ruby off the statue…

Not only serfs are at the event! These are the High King of Mythron’s Crown Knights, infinitely more skilled than your average Mythron grunt. Their leader, Malcus the Resolute, bears a white cape.

Uh, oh. Who let these clowns in? George and Halhi visit the event.

Who is this mysterious warrior?

Rego brought his personal military too. ;)

Overall shots. :)

Windows!

Here is the leader of the Green Elves, descendents of the Great Elves of old. They still watch over the tower built by their ancestors, and are the gracious hosts of today’s event.

Figless! :D

Foliage.

The statue is said to hold the sorcerers actual armor, enchanted to never rust.

My favorite part, the light-up function! I built in three light bricks, so with a push of the lever on the back all three light up! It lights up the windows on all three sides of tower!

One last shot. I really love how the irregular base came out. :)

Creator’s Comments:

I love how this MOC turned out! As soon as I heard the category I knew what I had to do, and my idea fit right into the Serf’s Up MA category! What do serfs do on their day off? Go see a joust!

I love the textures I was able to get on the tower, and the light-up function is so cool in real life! I also think the spotty foliage came out well, and the SNOT and angles on the tower came together well.

Alright, good luck Andrew! The Tourney has been an awesome contest, and I’m honored to have made it to the final round! Thanks to the judges, you made this a great contest! Thanks for viewing to everyone else! ;)

The layering/landscaping is fantastic! The irregular shape is also pretty good, as is the fence. The tower I have mixed feelings about. The masonry there is looks pretty good, but the design of the building looks almost futuristic, and definitely unrealistic. It would be perfect as an ancient alien shrine or something. :P

Hi Toa, nice effort on your build. My biggest nitpick is that the overall build looks out of place and perhaps a bit too much. With your tower, perhaps less would be more. It looks like you were trying to go for something different -which you accomplished with an unrealistic look. On the contrary, you did a nice job with the foliage. Score: 3

Great MOC, as the other judges said this was a very tough call. I really like what you did with the tower, and contradictory to what others have said I actually quite like the shape. On top of that you had an incredible landscape and some nice details, like the windows on the tower. However what it came down to for me was the fact that your opponents build just had so many well done components, whereas yours, although it was splendid, only really had the tower and the landscape. For that reason, along with your opponents wonderful interior and nice textures Andrew gets my vote, but you sure had a wonderful showing, and a great competition. It was a pleasure to see all of the builds that you produced, especially your round five one. Brilliant show, you should hold your head high.

Toa, well, great work on getting this far, and fantastic work on your entry here, but, sadly, I have to give my vote to Andrew.

You have some great landscaping here and some of the textures in the tower are great! I feel the overall shape of the tower is a bit strange but it still works well with the scene. Score: 4

Another tough decision, but in the end, Andrew gets my vote. I love your landscaping/base and all the textures you incorporated in it. However, Andrew's MOC captured the spirit of the category better, in my opinion, and I was also very impressed with his detailing. Thanks a lot for competing in the Tourney. It was an honor to judge your marvelous entries!

Quoting Freeling ++ Nice landscaping. I don't care what everyone else says. The tower shape looks good. Nice and unique. That's a good thing. The size of the base also looks good. It just works.
Thanks a ton Freeling! :D

Quoting Mark Erickson Wow! Great work man! There's lots to like about this! The figs are lively and well posed! The landscape is very detailed! I could go on and on. ;) I really like the different techniques you used! In several ways your entry is superior to Andrew's. Two things didn't look quite right to me however, first is the tower, Which is really a nice piece of work, but the base of stone fortifications is usually larger and wider then the top. Second, the landscape. It's a really (I mean REALLY) good landscape but it doesn't quite work as a jousting field. It's too uneven. I know from experience that uneven terrain can impede running and charging, etc. These aren't big issues build wise, it's more of an overall view. With that said, I'm gonna have to vote for Andrew. (apparently I'm a judge!) Awesome work though! It takes great skill to get to the finals of any contest! Best of luck! :)
Thanks Mark! I didn't show it too well in the pics, but what I was going for with the tower was an almost tree-like, permeate look, with a big top, skinnier middle and wide roots (like you can see here:http://mocpages.com/image_zoom.php?mocid=384352&id=/user_images/91392/13955971767) Thanks! :)
Quoting Alex Rode The landscaping is perfect! The tower looks a little cathedral-ish while the texture gives a rougher look. But it's certainly a unique tower! Best of luck man!
Thanks! I think the round edges on the tower make it look more eerie and, like you said, cathedral-esk as opposed to militaristic. :)
Quoting Grant Davis Supaaa close... Your opponent gets my vote however, I like that you went for cool angles on the tower, I feel like this is one of the instances when the technique didn't really help you achieve a better look than what you could have gotten with just a square. The landscaping is awesome, I'm gonna have to try a oddly shaped baseplate sometime. Good luck with the other judges.
Thanks Grant!

Quoting Halhi 141 Yeah, I agree with Brick - landscape is great...tower, not so much. I can't pinpoint exactly why, but it seems unbalanced or something. Having the base be smaller than the upper bits seems unrealistic. Nonetheless, the landscape is truly fantastic. Good luck!
Thanks! Unbalanced? I thought the shape was original and cool, but I guess sometimes it's better to just go with what's tried and proven. Thanks!
Quoting Adam Brunsting Landscape is good, but I don't care for the tower much.
Hmm, people are split over the tower... They eiter love it or h@te it. :P. Oh well, thanks. :)
Quoting Lindel Baskin Looks great! Very good original design, the overall layout and landscaping are great. That tower is just fantastic! It really captures a very epic feel. Good luck!

Thanks Matt! Great!
Quoting Cheryl P A wonderfully built tower. Very unusual. Well done.
Thanks! BTW guys, I forgot to say why the photos are worse than usual. The new camera that I've been using since the new year wouldn't turn on (AT ALL!) so I had to use the older camera. :(

Quoting Stephan N wonderful, fascinating landscape and the tower is unprecedented. I like the armor, especially that of the mysterious warrior. Super job
Thanks Stephan, glad you like it!
Quoting Greg 998 Awesome job!
Thanks Greg!
Quoting Mr. Cab Great job! The landscaping is phenomenal. The tower itself is more eh... like Brick said, not really square and not really round. :P My main concern is the texture though. At the bottom of the tower it is mostly light bley stone, then the rest of the way to the top it is dark gray mixed with tan. I would have stuck to one or the other... Other than that, great job!
Thanks! I'm surprised you guys don't like the tower, I thought the shape came out well. I thought changing the colors would be interesting visually, and the change gave the tower a unique look. Kind of old and sinister. ;)
Quoting Professor B. Okay, just have to make sure the word is said 3 times. EPIC landscape man! I'm really loving the... uh... jousting area? :P

Thanks Justin!
Quoting The Object of Legend Really like the scenery and feel of this MOC! The tower is fascinating in construction, though I'm not sure how to feel about it. It definitely provides a darker and more sinister mood, and, if I were judge, you get some extra points for creativity. Great job!
Thanks a bunch! :)
Quoting ~ Brick Well, the landscape is epic. The tower is sorta "okay" in my opinion. It isn't round, but it isn't square. It tries to blend square and round together with slopes and what not....but I think a round tower would have looked much better. Oh well.
Really? I really like the shape of the tower.
