A revolutionary spaceship design with a retro appearance.
About this creation

Although it was regarded as a backwards move by some designers, the "Tadpole" was in fact a major advance in extra-terrestrial fluid dynamics. It was found that modern, smooth "SNOT" designs experienced abnormally high viscous drag when operating in dense atmospheres. This effect was particularly noticeable on high density planets, where the high strength of the gravity caused the atmosphere to be compressed into a liquid, rather than a gas.

Scientists looked back in time for inspiration and came up with a hull material that echoed the corrugated fuselage of the Junkers Ju 52 and the dimples on the ball from a long forgotten game called "golf". (Golf was outlawed centuries ago for constantly spoiling good walks). The Llwyngwril Extra-terrestrial Geometry Organisation, designed a series of plates that could be clipped together to build the hulls of spacecraft. Damaged panels could be easily removed and replaced. The design team were so proud of their achievement that they moulded the initials of their group onto the spots on each panel.

A scaled down version of the panels were later developed into a popular children's toy. This ultimately led to the destruction of the galaxy when a group of AFOLs built a castle so huge, that its gravitational field caused it to spontaneously collapse in on itself, creating a black hole.

The designers later denied that their historical researches had also uncovered several episodes of "Blake's 7", which inspired the shape of this spaceship.

How did I not comment on this? I'm sure I saw it. In anycase, I love classic designs like these! The smooth curves of the retro rockets never cease to catch attention!

Quoting Stuart Lucas A reallt nice retro design here, I do like the tapering shape and the bubble canopy is perfect. Great write-up too - long live the stud, and I'm glad to hear that golf will be outlawed in the future! ;-)
Mark Twain was so right about golf, plus if you play golf there's less time for Lego :)

Quoting Nick Barrett :-)) Always love reading your posts... wonderful wit and stunning building add up to a total delight.
Thank you! I must say that part of the inspiration to build this was your very smooth, yet covered in studs, cars; especially your 2CV and MG.

Quoting Kevin Yoo Studs-on-top always gives vehicles a more industrious appearance. I cover the studs with flat plates and they look great.
It's true that you can cover the studs up (and I've a big spaceship to build in the summer that will do this) but my idea with this build was to celebrate Lego's studs.

Quoting matt rowntRee It's the Liberator! Loved Blake's 7. Great ship, I love the struts. Wonderful retro feel towards the old Republic Serials. Backstory is pure brilliance. Darn Lego black holes. XD Excellent!
Thank you! I think that this spaceship's knobbly-ness is the exact opposite of the beautiful house that you've just built.

Quoting TF Twitch The sad thing is that the science behind this design for moving through a liquid actually makes sense. A liquid atmosphere, on the other hand, not so much. Unless I missed something in biology class a LONG time ago...
Back when I was doing my degree in aircraft design, companies were trying out panels with small grooves in them. The idea was that the boundary layer would flow better along grooves of a certain size and the panel could replace the smooth aluminium ones normally used on aircraft.

Quoting cyberfrank 2010 I don t know blake 7, I know tintin, and, yes, I see similarities, I find it particularly interesting that the body gets narrower at the bottom, it gives it a more attractive looks than even all along, the narrative is of course expected and so appreciated from your creations by now, it goes in pair with your originality, well done David!
Thank you! The main thing with this build was to make that body which get narrower. I think that I'd like to build something similar to this in real bricks but with more play functions and possibly some landing gear.

Quoting clayton Marchetti I really love that dome canopy. Cool 50s styling . I like the shaping of the struts holding the engines. Sleek looking rocket ship. Awesome!
Thank you! I had quite a job choosing the right parts for the struts. I did want them to be studded too but I think that the contrast between them and the rest of the ship works well.
