About this creation
Title: BBRC R1: Onepu
Introduction:
Jolly good day for a crab race, eh what old chap? My first-ever Bionicle finally gets the attention he deserves.
Body:
The 2014 Biannual Bio-Revamp Cup

Untitled

Onepu is not my favorite Bionicle - that honor goes to Toa Kopaka, my second Bionicle - but he does deserve some credit for introducing me to the theme. As a character, Onepu was an archivist in Metru Nui (the sporting kind who would lead expeditions in search of Rahi to bag for his exhibits) and later became the captain of the Onu-Koro Ussalry on Mata Nui. Overall, he makes me think of one of those pre-WWI British military gentlemen who killed rare animals to prove their manliness and maintained a steadfast faith in the classic cavalry tactic of charging any and all enemies (infantry, machine gun nests, submarines...) while dropping words like "chappie" in conversation. As a constraction figure, Onepu boasted a mean throwing arm, a rare purple color scheme and the dubious record of being one of the six smallest Bionicle sets ever - I'm lovin' it, eh what?

In honor of all this, I have built this figure:

IMAG3184

Purple feet, purple mask, black torso, arms that hang down to his ankles and a throwing disk - it's a perfect representation!

IMAG3185

Oof.

IMAG3171

Lifting...

IMAG3174

Twisting...

IMAG3176

Watching it fly.

IMAG3177

You may notice a few differences between this model and the original. For starters, I added bronze to his armor as befits the captain of the Ussalry and I neglected to spring-load the throwing arm. Also, he has a lot more than eight pieces as well as all-new knee joints.

IMAG3178

In the back, Onepu has a protruding structure similar to the gear structures of the 2003 line of Matoran, which I interpret as an engine block. These aren't creatures of flesh, after all - they're robots with some living organs and tissues.

IMAG3179

Surprise, he has gears as well! They connect to nothing except my nostalgia.

IMAG3180

This is the new knee technique - ZNAPS connectors, for those of you who missed that bizarre and (hopefully) long-dead line. They give a good range of flexibility with limited integrity, but they helped me add some purple.

IMAG3181

Here you can see Hahli in her original incarnation as a Matoran of Mata Nui and (most of) Onepu in his form as a Happy Meal toy.

IMAG3182

If that wasn't enough, I included a shot of the complete Onepu set and a view that show's Hahli's "engine block".

IMAG3183

As a final comparison, here is Onepu with his Toa, Onua Nuva. The original instructions came with a picture much like this, so I felt the need to replicate it here.

IMAG3187

For the judges, Onepu might have doubled his original height, but he's still a safe half-inch below the limit.

This was a fun model and a strange one. I spent a few hours studying the challenge in the best way possible (digging up the original Mata Nui Online Game from 2001 and playing it for three hours straight), and I decided to change my building strategy completely. In the past, I have attempted to build perfect humanoids - sleek, well-proportioned and completely-flexible models. When I sat down to build Onepu, I threw this obsession out the window (or into a file for future use) and decided to focus on the original concept of Bionicle: a rugged world of living machines built to industrial standards. Hopefully it's a step in the right direction, and I look forward to applying this viewpoint as I revamp models in future rounds (assuming, of course, that I pass this one).
Now that that's out of the way, I have a short list of credits. The title picture is a product of my own amateur editing skills, but the drawing of Onepu as well as much of his biographical information is from the Bionicle wiki. The rest of his data and personality is inferred from the old MNOG.

"I am Onepu, High Commander of the Ussalry, Veteran of the Makuta Wars, Right Hand of the Turaga Whenua of Onu Koro. Oh... and Taipu's here too." Classic character. Onepu is easily one of my favourites, and the armour and stance shows off his proud and cavalier attitude well.

The torso is nice, but I don't like the arms and legs much. Also, the gold takes away from the revamping some. Five points.

This is excellent. The gold ads to the MOC but detracts a little from authenticity. However, it's brilliantly presented, with some very clever features of design. Take these 9 arbitrary points.
