MocAthalon 2014 Team Plastic Surgeons - (You're Busted! 'King Minos')
About this creation
You’re Busted!
Build a bust! No, not someone getting arrested, I’m talking about a statue from the shoulder up! It can be a real person or a fictional character but it must be “life sized.”

Team: Plastic Surgeons
Link to the MocAthalon here

I've been wanting to make a more sculptural piece, along the lines of some of my artwork ( my art website.) There's an awful lot of Picasso in there too.

Quoting MortalSwordsman . Brilliant. It is great to see your artwork creeping into your Lego artwork. The name of your team works very well with this build. However if you were a plastic surgeon I would make sure professional indemnity insurance is up to date ;)
Ha! Thanks that made me laugh.

Mr. Smith, though initially I believe we were looking for an existing characters (fictional and no-fictional) for this category, I believe you did a splendid job. Way to think outside the box -adding an artistic aspect to the category. Score: 4

Quoting Tim C Nice work, David. I knew by whose hands this work was created as soon as I saw it, but I was thinking tribal mask at first. I can definitely see the Picasso in there, though. I think it's the well planned assymetry that makes it both interesting and unappealing at the same time. I mean no disrespect; after all, Picasso shot for interesting and unappealing in many of his works, which makes this a shrewdly fitting tribute to the artist. Well done, David, and good luck in the MOCathalon.
Coherence wasn't the main objective you are right.

Quoting Kevin J. Walter Score = 4 (normally, I'd give a 3 for the build itself - the artistic aspect/the abstract part of it scraped it up)
That age old argument, virtuosity or vision. Glad that vision won out this time. Some more building skills on show in my next build.

Quoting Topsy Creatori (StoveTopCreator!) Yes, this most assuredly is David in design and style. I do not have your background in art history, but I have always had a fascination with the ancient Minoan civilization. And there are several of Picasso’s works that have a Minoan/No.African feel to me. So I am assuming that is the idea behind the King Midas name? Good luck to you and your team! :)
Exactly my reference points. The category was so tempting you into the quest for realism, so of course I went the opposite direction ;).

Quoting matt rowntRee To pull off a bust is daunting, to pull off a bust in the style of the Cubists is challenging, to do both successfully is impressive. This, my friend, is beyond impressive. You did it! And with flying style as well. I love the fact that you took the category and made it completely your own. I understand MCs concerns about entering this as a bust; however, I can think of nothing better to suit the category. Your only concern now is if the judges are receptive to this particular Art movement. I think regardless of any outcome, this has to be one of your finest works. Truly a shining example of Art process and progress with a distinctive DAS flair. Proud of this one David. Definitely a masterpiece. Outstanding!
Thanks Matt. In these competitions of course you want to do well, but behind it I think we are all looking for those challenges to take our building forward. This one was what I needed to push myself into a new way of working. Next, the life sized figure.

Quoting Alex Sonny The use of shapes and colours is impressive! Even if someone may call it "simple", it in no way is. I may not have a degree in fine arts, but I know fine art when I see it (your art site is amazing as well, I'll just let you know. The pencil drawings are really special (I like pencil drawings)).
Thanks Alex.

Quoting David Alexander Smith If they want to quibble a bust definition, I say let them try. I know my source material and what is acceptable and not: http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst/research/arch/175/pages/bust.htm
Well okay.
sorry, that came across a bit over-defensive. Thanks for the advice.

Quoting MCLegoboy ! I wouldn't enter this. It won't be a big help to your team. It may be 1:1 scale from one direction, but I think they are looking for something a lot more different than this. They're going to want a sculpture that is 1:1 in all directions.
