The Butterfly Effect
Hi everyone, sorry for not being very active recently I have been really busy with a new baby and a new job. I have been building throughout this period and can now start posting my work.
About this creation
Prehistoric butterfly commissioned by Bright Bricks - the certified Lego professionals from the UK. It will form part of the Lego Lost World Zoo for Milestones Museum in Basingtstoke, UK. I have built several creatures for the show which I will post over the next few weeks.

As requested the wings and legs can be positioned into many different poses to simulate the various stages of flight. Unfortunately I did not have time to take multiple photos of this. The customer only wanted four colours used so they could build 5 more butterflies using other colours. This is the prototype only.

Hope you like it.

My son and I made this little butterfly as I was building the larger one. He called it Rainbow Wings.

This is a real Masterpiece. Original and beautifully made. Love the graduation of colors and the body very realistic. A pleasure to watch. Make some 6 or 8 little ones to suspend over your baby's cradle...

Hi Gabor. Yes, in the end I used 4 long axles, the wings have 3 technic bricks (with axle hole) for each axle to sit in. The legs and wing supports are connected (inside the body) creating a 4x4 box of technic axles and conectors - very strong. The legs bend but they can take the weight. Thanks mate.

Great! Are the technic axles strong enough to hold the wings?

@ Henrik – Thanks, I think we took some artistic licence here, there is no evidence of giant butterflies but it is what the Museum wanted. @ Joost – Hi mate, I know what you mean but it was the best way to create the coloured wings with the pieces we had available. Hope all is well. @ Steffen thanks :). @ Harry - The design is simple but inside the body is a technic frame to hold the legs and wings in place that was quite a challenge. Thank you for the nice comment. @ Mr Barrett – thanks mate, I am not helping at the show but I will be taking the family, maybe you would like to join us??

First things first... WOW! What a beautiful thing. As I live 15 miles from Milestones (it's a very interesting museum - now even more so!) I look forward to seeing this in the plastic. Many many congratulations on your job and baby, I'm really pleased things are going well :-)

Firstly, congratulations on the new baby, best wishes to your family, I'm sure all you boys will have a great, Lego filled childhood! Now onto this, beautiful work, the detail is so simple, yet so intricate! I'm sure butterflies are very hard to recreate with Lego, all the details are pretty much spot on though! Of course, I have no experience in building Lego butterflies, however from my point of view it looks great! Well done :)

That's beautiful, Joe! Nice liaison of colours, though the wings are a tad heavy in relation with a quite elegant body. That all said without any skill on my side :-), so please only remember that it is beautiful!

Congratulations on your family increase and the new job. Absolutely beautiful, and gigantic butterfly. I seem to remember that prehistoric dragonflies could be up to 70cm wingspan, but could butterflies become even so big?

You've mastered this. Perfectly recreated it's beautiful wings, and it's ugly/scary face. But, in all seriousness, this is very beautiful, and wouldn't look out of place in a Legoland Hotel.

Fantastic build! The wings, of course, look great, but I am equally impressed by the job you did on the body, including the legs, antennae, and proboscis, which all appear to be spot on (and I can say that with some certainty, having just seen the butterfly exhibit at my local museum of science).

Wonderful colours in the brick-built wings. My favourite photo is the one where you first see it standing on its legs and realise that there's a neat body too.

Wow guys thanks for the comments on the build, the job and the new addition to the family - I now have 3 boys to play Lego with and working with Lego is AWESOME!! @MC - the legs bow under the weight but they do job, just. The claws can sometimes splay out but when they are clued in place they work perfectly. This prototype has not been clued so it could be dismantled and reverse engineered. Thanks everyone
