Green-Blooded Rainosian Rank Challenge: The Rivers Ran Red
WARNING: This MOC shows violence taking place between disproportionate, blocky, yellow, plastic figures and contains graphic depictions of blood through arrangements of red, transparent bricks. If any of these images or others of their type offend you, please write your congressman/MP/other representative concerning the violent imagery prevalent in today's youth culture, blog about your distress and, in short, bother someone else about it. Thank you.
About this creation
"Show your love of your country through any means you wish in this test of patriotism, whether by slandering the other factions with a propaganda MOC, building a symbol for the island, or, even better, performing a heroic deed in the name of the mother/father/non-parental-guardianland." Let the blood of Mythron flow.

IMAG3018

A warrior and a boy were trekking across the center of Rainos, traversing a grassland withered by a dry winter. They had deviated several miles from their course to Iremore, and the youth was frustrated with the extra walking.

His father stopped at the edge of an embankment.

"Look well, son, for this place is part of your history."

"What, some dried-out creek?" the witty lad responded.

IMAG3019

"Nay, son, this is the site of the Battle of Unbinding, fought five years and two-score days past on the day of the New Year between our countrymen and the army of Mythron."

The boy shut his mouth, ashamed. If he had known what ground was beneath his feet, he would never have jested in that manner.

IMAG3011

"It was a surprise attack. Seeking a stronghold for the winter, the army of Mythros set out across the plain, confidently believing that our forces had dispersed in face of the cold weather. Their commanders were wrong - the mightiest army Rainos has ever seen lay in wait, hidden along ditches much like this one.

IMAG3012

"Every clan, village and city of Rainos had at least one lad or lass in the combat, but, with the exception of Bartok and his house-carls, none conducted themselves half so well as the wild hill-folk of the east, each as strong as a grer with the courage of an animal that doesn't know death.

IMAG3013

"We used to say that these mountain-folk were enraged by two things: fighting enemies so weak that they fell too quickly, and fighting enemies that they could not topple without a struggle. It was a fine thing to see them tear the heart from a column of infantry, so long as you didn't get too close - when the humor was on them, they didn't bother to distinguish between Mythronian and Rainosian low-lander.

IMAG3014

"With mountain-men cutting a path and the armies of all clans wreaking their own brands of havoc until the streams ran red with the gore of civilization's finest, it's no wonder that Bartok was able to reach the Mythronian king and part head from body. From that day forward, Rainos has been indisputably ours, free from outside rule forever. It was a worthy last victory for the hill folk."

IMAG3020

The soldier's son picked up on the tone of the story's final line.

"Their last victory? What happened to them? Why have I never seen one?"

His father plucked something from the earth.

IMAG3021

"Well, they were always a quite people for such a ferocious one, living up in the hills and speaking their own lingo. This is the real reason for their decline, though."

"An arrow?"

"Aye, arrows and the people who shoot them. The hill folk wore naught but leather and their own masses of hair, sometimes using shields when they felt the need for more protection. Since unbinding, some clans - those bloody Bulls in particular, but even ours has done it - have felt that it's time to move forward and take up those finer parts of Mythron's legacy. They expand their borders and the hill folk move back. Progress is all very well, son, but sometimes I wonder if we're destroying the last true Rainosians - men and women living as they will, untouched by the taints of law or technology."

IMAG3022

On that parting thought, the soldier slid from the bank.

"We'd best get a move on - daylight's fading and we want to make town before we lose it altogether."

Fourth Wall:

Philosophy and moodiness - is that the best way to live up to the standards of a green-blooded Rainosian? If you thought this MOC was about how parts of Rainos are developing into power-hungry mini-empires (especially the Bulls), then you missed an important part and I get to explain all of the meaning and symbolism inherent in the MOC. Hooray - English class!

The "green-blooded Rainosians" are the hill-folk - true barbarians living in the same way they have for centuries. All Rainosians are somewhere between their extreme level of tribalism and Mythron's high and mighty ways. The Bulls and many of the clans I use want to build empires of their own. The Dragons are a massive, regimented fighting force with mass-produced armor and equipment that can meet the enemy with the finest technology available; the Ibers are more primitive, but they take any land they can get including their longstanding outpost in Falmor. Rego Arian has the chaotic, bloodthirsty nature of a hill man (Infernum's recent MOC may or may not have inspired this) but far too much polish. Bartok is practically a Mythronian aside from his beliefs concerning freedom. All of these new ways are changing the world, but there is still a tinge of green somewhere in the vital fluids of everyone who calls Rainos a home.

This idea was echoed in my choice of narrators. The soldier is close to being a relic, and his son and successor (impatient and sometimes blind to his elder's reasoning) uses much newer parts with the exception of his torso. Johnny Thunder's head on the father is a symbol all in its own - the classic Adventurer with an official capital "A" who hasn't had a line of products in over a decade but keeps coming back for more - the Orient Expedition re-vamp, a role in Lego Universe and now a part in the Lego Movie and a fresh minifigure that comes with Benny's spaceship.

That section should have been titled "Between the Lines," but now I'll mention the build and the figures in the true Fourth Wall.

IMAG3015

The blood, a new technique for me, was fun and a little gross. I hope you liked the splatter on the severed head, too.

IMAG3023

To show the change in time, I replaced the blood with a dried-out bed for the creek. The rocks are fairly simple, so I won't take the time to explain them. They were a LOT of fun, though.

IMAG3025

The top of the bank isn't bad, either. It's the right color for dead, dry grass in the winter and it was a good field to pose figures on.

IMAG3026

Speaking of figures, here they are: Hill man, Johnny Thunder, kid, silly Mythronian.

IMAG3027

The hill warrior is pretty cool - the CMF Forest Maiden's hair is rubbery enough to flex over fantasy-era dwarf beards, and it layers very nicely on the back and over the shoulders.

IMAG3028

IMAG3029

The spearman/light infantry came into being when I wanted some way to use the blue hands I had taken out of an Insectoid and stuck one on a spear with a black one for a pennant. Then I needed a nasty imperial scum-ball to hold it, and I made this handsome fellow and gave him another blue hand as a feather. It's hard to believe that, until last November, I cared nothing for custom minifigures.

As always, thanks for viewing. Feel free to rate, comment, join Rainos, volunteer to be my personal slave, go get a drink or actually write that complaining letter about the blood - whatever you think best. See ya later.

Quoting Toa Infernum Really nice story Gilbert! I love the idea of the Hill-men! I like that I partially inspired it too. ;)
Hopefully some Rainosian secretly has a large amounts of beard-and-rubbery-hair parts, furry faces, bare torsos and leather pants - now I almost want to see these people in action.

Quoting Thomas of Tortuga The colors on the bank are terrific, and the water actually looks OK for a barely-flowing stream. Also, the hill-man fig is a really nice combo :)
The stream is fine, the colors are bad, the stream is bad, the colors are good, the stream is bad, the stream is fine - i'm so confused, but thanks for the praise, Thomas

Quoting ~ Brick @Gilbert No, I don't wish I was a Rainosian...but he'll look so much cooler when he's killed by Mythronian soldiers!
Ah, but those Mythronians don't have long hair or beards, meaning that they can be shown with body parts flying away in every direction without hindrance.

Quoting Lord Skarik Awesome! For those angles did you use something similar to this?http://www.classic-castle.com/howto/articles/grassscape.html
Nope. I don't use many hinges like that ever, and they leave gaps that this technique doesn't have to deal with.

Quoting Graham Gidman Wow, I love the titled plates! I'm gonna have to use that sometime... I'm not a huge fan of the water, though, it just doesn't 'flow' (sorry for the bad pun), but I have to disagree with Halhi on your color choices. I'm actually a big fan of colors, and I'll probably be using the same ones for an upcoming MOC. Anyway, great work!
Thanks, that's a relief - I always thought the colors were fine, but I had some doubts about the water texture.

Quoting Halhi 141 Nice story, but I'm not so fond of the build. The tilted plates work well, but the rest doesn't I think; the river looks awkward and I think the trans red could be blended better if the clear was replaced with trans blue or something. I also think that the colors up top don't go well together; brown+dark tan generally doesn't look all that great, maybe dark tan and dark green would be better. Anyway, it's a decent build, but not up to your usual standards.
I don't have any green to put on top, or I would have used it whether it was wrong for the season or not. Also, bloody rivers don't have blue in them, especially under a faded winter sky, but I will seek out better flowing-water techniques.

Quoting Professor B. Wow, those angles are amazing! I'd love to learn how you did it. I've got some ideas, but, I'm not entirely positive I'm right.
Use 30-degree inverted slopes as a base with the stude up and facing outward, stack some greebley rock parts on top of that and then top with plates to get a nice 30-degree incline.

Quoting Kai Bernstein Great work, Gilbert! Nice story and I really like the hinged landscaping/rocks. I take it you didn't have enough trans-red?
I had enough, but I used it in moderation - a real shower of blood isn't a concentrated stream, it's a scatter of blobs and droplets.
