My quite literally last-minute entry to Round 2 of The Tourney!
About this creation
The Tourney

My opponent, Jacob Pennington, and his entry

Guild: Average Gnomes
Motto: Validus proeliators gerum veneficus rutilus indusia.
Theme Song

Bracket: Foot Combat

Category:
-Beasts
Not all enemies are the two legged kind. Many different types of beasts roam the land, some no one even knows about. Build some sort of a beast, and have a MOC of your character battling it.
NOTE: This doesn't have to be a real kind of beast, made-up ones are allowed, too. Also, although the beast being made out of minifigure part is allowed, brick-built ones are strongly suggested.

Lindel emerged from the tunnel into a small cave. A putrid, sickly sweet stench hung in the air. Squinting in the dim light, he could make out natural stone walls dripping with purple slime. Clusters of black eggs clung to the walls and floor. His task was to retrieve one of these eggs, and return with it to the surface.

He stooped, grabbing hold of one of the eggs. The soft, slimy sphere was warm to the touch, pulsed a rapid heartbeat. I'd reached my goal, but where was the guardian?

Thatís when he heard it. A raspy breath, directly above his head. The Narslog reared over him, its bloated body slick with slime. Venom dripped from its jaws between rows of vicious teeth. Its feelers quivered, tasting the air...searching. The beast couldnít see him! It was blind, relying entirely on its hearing and smell.

Darting quickly forward, he slashed his sword across the beastís side.

Its tentacles whipped back with surprising speed. Sharp, needlelike spines ripped into his arm, and he dropped his sword, cursing. Numbness seeped through his arm. The tentacles swung toward him again, wrapping around my arm, which hung useless at his side. He struggled hopelessly as he was dragged, stumbling, toward the Narslogís gaping maw. He was so close he could see the saliva glistening on its cruel fangs. At the last second, he drew his second sword with his free arm, digging it deep into the monsterís throat.

Lindel was thrown roughly to the ground, splattered with slime, as the creature thrashed in pain. He rolled to my feet, retrieved his sword and plunged it straight through the beast.

It collapsed, wriggling to the ground. Slime oozed from its wounds. He raised his sword over his head, then brought it down, cutting a wide gash in the Narslogís side. He hacked repeatedly, until the corpse lay in two pieces on the cave floor.

Breathing heavily, he turned back to the egg. With one swift motion, he ripped it free of the cave floor. His first task in The Tourney was complete.

The Narslog.

And a couple figless shots:

I'm very happy with how the build came out. Thanks much to my fellow Average Gnomes, especially Kai Bernstein for all their help. As I said, I'm very pleased really with the build, but I procrastinated until the last second on the photography and text, and they were somewhat rushed. Thanks for looking, and please rate and comment!

Quoting Jacob Pennington I would just like to say you really, REALLY impressed me with your build. You stepped up your game and almost beat me. Trust me, the judges said it was really close. It was great competing against you! :)
Thanks, Jacob! :) You were a fantastic opponent, and it was great to compete against you too. Good luck in Round 3!

Your beast is really nice, but it takes a minute to kind of figure out what it is, whereas your opponent's was instantly recognizable, and I think that's what hurt you. I'm sorry, but he gets my vote. Better luck next year!

Thanks much, Alex! Glad you like it. =) It's too late now though, two of the judges have already cast their votes.

Quoting David FNJ I have to say that your creature was quite the mysterious one. But the whole cave icky feel was definitely there. This was one of the harder ones for me to judge, and in the end, my vote goes with Jacob's entry. His build was more cohesive as a whole, and his dragon, though odd, could be made out more than this beast, even though your beast is very cool. Still a tough choice. Good luck with the other judges.
Thanks, David! Presentation was definitely my weakest point on this. Thanks for all the time and work you put into this contest, and I look forward to participating again next year! =)

You guys are very mean... so hard to choose, I in the end had to go for your opponent, as it had a tad cleaner look on the monster himself, I preferred your landscaping to his but his beast just beat you out in spite of that. Super close round. I wish you good building in the future.

Officially my favorite build from you. Such a unique build! I'm glad you didn't just build a regular cave, and actually made sure that it was instantly recognizable as a beast's lair. Those purple tiles sure are awesome. Great job!

Pretty nice. I think you should have shown some of the WiP pictures of the beast in addition, it doesn't look quite as good in these pictures. Anyway, I love this, like I said before, the colors and styling are fantastic, the pictures just don't do it justice (I had the same problem...)
