CMC/LOM FB: Tomb Raider
I'm not going to attempt to disguise it - my last entry to Caleb's Minifigure Contest (Category: Modern Combat) was heavily inspired by the latest Tomb Raider game. More about that later, and the LOM part even later.
About this creation
IMAG0148

For those of you who don't know (including me until an accident earlier this year), Tomb Raider is a video game that stars Lara Croft as the archeologist with the bow and the climbing axe that goes around killing lots of people - perfect for a modern combat entry, right? Anyway, in the latest game, she's shipwrecked on an island with centuries of history - medieval nearly-Japanese towns, WWII-era Japanese military and, recently, a population of homicidal cultists from around the globe.

IMAG0150

Obviously, this isn't the game's protagonist - I made him before I decided to waste ten hours over three weekends playing on an xbox (which I do not do regularly, I assure you). I did, however, modify his gear - he has a pistol at his side and Croft's murderous little axe opposite. Anyway, enjoy the pictures. I'll stop commenting for a while.

Into the light! My favorite moment in the game was set atop a high, modern (WWII-era) tower with nothing around but sky. That came about a third of the way through... the ending was a let-down. Note the barbed wire, searchlight, decaying concrete wall and other fun details, if you please.

(Note - those little posts are hidden around the island in the game as tie-off points for ropes shot from Lara's high-power bow. I, of course, selected a more-feasible grappling hook for my explorer)

A few comments on the build -
As I said before, I tried to incorporate different environments from the Tomb Raider game into my vignette, and I ended up choosing the tomb environment (dark chasms, moldering bodies, bits of flotsam from shipwrecks, low spaces reinforced by wooden timbers) and the bunker environment (crumbling concrete, exposed re-bar (reinforcing metal bars), barbed wire, electrical signs and searchlights. I think I captured the essence very nicely, albeit with more browns on the lower section, and I owe the hinging technique used on the collapsing bunker wall and the clump of driftwood to Halhi 141 - it's the same process he uses to articulate his rock pieces. As for my rock technique, that was simply a matter of using thirty-degree inverted slopes to build a rock that leans forward, then capping it with cheese wedges to regain a horizontal surface. All in all, this is my favorite out of all my rock work, and this vignette is my favorite out of my CMC entries. The figure, my daring archeologist, ranks well above my space pirate and a little below my popular Raid figure.

Sir MacFiercest's odyssey continues...

IMAG0176

After six days of sailing and trekking into the wilderness of Falmor, we have found the tomb my uncle was looking for. Strange, I didn't think it would be this easy.

IMAG0177

But then, maybe finding it was meant to be the easy part...

Quoting Halhi 141 By the way, when will MacFiercest's story be continued....?
Well, since Steven's already in the province of Meids, he can't very well sail there from Rainos, can he? I'm using the MOC-off to catch up on a lot of side-characters, actually.

Quoting Caleb R. Splendid build and figure! Only complaint: yet another build used as a freebuild :P
Well, LOM is my MOCpages life and I built and planned this for dual use. Plus, I have to keep ahead of quick risers like you, remember? :PPPPP

Quoting Kai Bernstein Fantastic textures, minifig and overall build with, yeah, the exception of the barbed wire. I also really like your new border designs.
Okay, so the wire really doesn't work, but the borders do. Thank you for the feedback.

Quoting Lindel Baskin Great work, Gilbert! The build is fantastic, and the minifig looks amazing. I love the crumbling look. I'm not sure about the barbed wire, but the rest of your techniques are top-notch. Good luck with the judges!
You don't like the barbed wire? I'll keep that in mind, but I bought about fifty of those levers and I had to see if I could use them. Thanks for the feedback.

Quoting Thomas of Tortuga You can shut the blinds in most rooms, you know :P Lighting on the second half looks good, too :)
I did shut the blinds - that's how I got the nice, smooth lighting for most of the build. I had them open on the title pic, though, to emphasize the ascent into daylight and the triumph of... whatever it was that happened. But you did see through my excuse.

Quoting Halhi 141 Great build! Actually, as far as I can tell, the techniques aren't all that similar to the ones I use for my rocks - most of my rocks are hinged using either headlight bricks or click hinges, placed at an angle (due to a one-stud connection). Anyway, good luck!
You told me to buy Bionicle ball joints for hinging rocks and you use normal attachments? Well, then. Thanks for the info.

The LOM section is up - I had to wait for the sun to go down to try a different lighting technique. (Yes, that's what it was - I had the whole thing planned...)

Quoting Stephen Boe I've seen my brother play the new one, which is really how I came to like it. I guess I should've mentioned I haven't actually played any of the games. My brother did get it, though, maybe I should play it.
It's fairly fun, and not a bad story. The first two thirds are the best, though.
