Hero Factory Invasion from Below Review #3: Stormer Freeze Machine
Well, after getting completely and hopelessly trashed by Jaw Beast, Stormer decided it was time to up the scale and get payback! This is set #44017; the 88 piece Stormer Freeze Machine!
About this creation
Right, as we open the bag, we see:

I got two sticker sheets... hrrm, odd. Must have been a packaging error; You only need one. All the other ones have one sticker sheet. Kinda a shame that I won't use either of them. I hope you don't mind; The glue will ruin the pieces, and I don't think they add too much to the set, so I'm leaving them out.

Okay, onto the real pieces:
1 regular torso piece
2 black six-long lower limb pieces
1 black five-long lower limb piece
1 grey four-long lower limb piece
1 black three-long lower limb piece
3 grey five-long upper limb pieces
3 black single socket pieces

Armour type pieces include;
2 gunmetal "Savage Planet" paw pieces
2 gunmetal four-long armour pieces
1 silver five-long printed armour piece
5 white three-long armour pieces
1 orange seat piece

Extra pieces include;
2 gunmetal "Stormer XL" feet
2 gunmetal "Savage Planet" armour extentions
1 white turbine piece
2 white/trans-blue "Brain Attack" flame pieces
1 black ammunition feed
1 gunmetal three-long Axel connector piece
1 trans-blue windscreen piece
2 trans-blue cylindrical container pieces
and an assortment of small system and technic pieces

Some of those system and technic pieces go together to make the minifigs of this set:
Preston Stormer (You can see my Evo Walker Review to see the ins and outs of the HF minifigures.
2 of the 3 existing Beast Larve variants (Orange and Red). Again, Evo Walker Review.

This is the second set that the Stormer Minifig appears in. As I said in the last review, Stormer is my favorite Minifig out of the Hero Minifigs. The bulky look of these guys really suits Stormer, and that head is very nicely replicated from the larger version. I won't go into a huge amount of detail about it.

I forgot to show it, but Stormer in this set carries one of those Galaxy Squad guns. Nothing special, almost all of them carry it.

"Who's the one hopelessly outsized and outmatched now?!"

This is the Stormer Freeze Machine. It looks exactly what I imagine a typical Lego Mech would look like, except built out of HF pieces. Awesome.

It looks nice enough from the front...

From any other angle, however, it is completely lacking. Yes, these Machine sets look horrible from the back, and from the side... it's not worth mentioning. They all have this problem, but Stormer's mech seems to suffer the most from it.

The legs are nice. In fact, the legs are my favorite bit of the whole set. The use of the Stormer XL feet are nice. No only do they look more mechanical, they add a little contrast to the regular HF feet that the other Humanoid Battle Machines have. Here is also the best example of the colour scheme. The heavy use of Gunmetal grey here, with little hints of white there are really effective. It contributes to the Mechanical look of the whole thing, and makes it stand out from Stormer, with only little hints towards the colour scheme of the guy himself. It also adds a darker and more serious touch to the Battle Machines as well.

A lot of people were kind of unsure about this large crotch piece used here. I myself was worried it would look silly. Lucklily, there is enough poseability and articulation to it that you can adjust it to a pose that looks good enough from the front. It looks silly from the sides though whatever you do.

All of these Machine sets have a Toxic Reapa style Balljoint sticking up on the top. But it's okay this time around though, because there usually is enough coverage around it to not make it too distracting. If it bugs you, though, it's easy enough to add a three-long armour piece on it.

The Paw hand is okay-ish. It's kind of lazy, but hey, it works quite well for the Battle Machines that use them. The arm on this one is kind of stubby though. I know the designers are trying to keep the proportions correct, which I can respect, but for once, I think proportions don't much matter; I would have loved to see a huge massive gorrilla arm to swipe away foes. It would have looked crazy, but seriously awesome at the same time. I'm not gonna complain about what we got, but in honesty, we could've got better.

This arm is lazy though. That cannon section doesn't look properly attached. I would have liked to see that done a whole lot better. Also, insert rant from Jaw Beast vs Stormer review about printed pieces.

Good to see the return of these Ice pieces. Love to see a whole lot more of these pieces, they are such beautiful pieces!

These containers are nice. They kinda look a bit large on the package, but they kind of add character to these things. It's a nice extra play feature though. There is one problem, though;

The maximum number of Beast Larve you can fit in here is two. And even then, you kinda have to squeeze them in. You can add a third one in, if you add an extra pin to the pinholes by the teeth to keep it closed. From a practical perspective, this isn't good; if there's four active battle machines and millions of these things attacking the city, and the most larve they can capture is 12 of them, then there's going to be trouble. At least you can fit the ones in the sets in, though, which means playability is good with these things.

Stormer fits into his seat okay, just like the rest of these guys. There isn't much room for his feet though, which is a shame.

This draws me to my final bit. Sorry to go back to the colour scheme, but there has been negative reaction to the orange parts of Stormer's machine. I would have not minded this so much. The small trans orange pieces would have been nice, adding a little contrast and flavour to the whole thing, but it kind of ruined itself by using an orange seat. That takes away from the idea with the orange, by adding too much orange. Trouble is, adding a green seat wouldn't have made things any better. I thinking using such unique colours for these seats was a mistake. If they had used a non specialized colour like black or grey, it would have suited the colour schemes of these guys a whole lot better, but using green or orange means that they'll only work with either a green or orange battle machine, neither of which appear in this line.

And that's my first humanoid Battle Machine review! I'm going to rate this set in three different catogories; Toy value (how good it is to play with and pose ect.), Design Value (The design, including the colour scheme and how it was built) and Moccist Value (The amount of good pieces).
This is how this set turns out;

Toy Value: 4/5 (Spinning blades, opening and closing container, all that good stuff.)

Design Value: 2/5 (This one's a little too messy for my liking.)

Moccist Value: 2/5 (A very plain selection, although we do get a few nice pieces, like the ice pieces, for example.)

Total score: 8/15

Comments: My least favorite one of the line; it is very cluttered and a lot of stuff just looks off. Though I'll give the designers a break; Hero Factory Mechs are a very tough thing to pull off, and it was the designer's first time trying. This one was a bit of a faliure, but hopefully these things will get better over time.

Quoting Toa Chains Great review. I'm not really sure why but I sorta like this figure :P
Well, there are some nice features to it, even if I am not a fan of the whole thing :)

Quoting Legobob 29 Good review but not a good set :P that right arm is just so unfinished! I feel like the mech idea is awesome but it hasn't been executed well. I look forward to your next review and I'm also looking forward to your Evo XL machine because I think that one will be the one I get. :)
Yes, but as I said, I guess we can forgive them, considering it's their first time trying stuff out. Evo XL is on the way, along with the rest! ;)

Quoting Reaper . Ah, once again an excellent review. I think we're seeing a continuing theme among HF sets: No matter how good they look from the front or the sides or on the packaging, they are always going to have poor looking backs and lazy limbs (see the whole controversy about the original hollow arms). *sigh* Still. Thanks for the review Wert, always helpful. Those container piece actually look useful.
Yeah. I guess those who invest their time in HF should be used to it, but it's still a bummer. Ah well, thanks for the comment Reap!

Quoting Stormjay Rider Not enough of the Technic joy that I seek out in sets, and the other stuff is easily found in other sets. Looking forward to your thoughts on the other machines... I have a use for the container elements in mind.
Yes, Indeed. Those containers do spark some ideas for MOCs...

Quoting X ~ Personally it's my least favorite. It's just the clunky feel of it that kills it for me. Other than that it's okay. Also if you noticed the added orange is an homage to Stormer 2.0. ;) Nice Review Werty!
Yeah, there is that. Hrrm, I guess it could be seen that way... That's interesting. The orange works well when used in tiny amounts, like it was used in Stormer 2.0. If the seat was black or grey, like I said, then I'd be happier. Thanks for the comment!
