Hero Factory Invasion from Below Review #2: Jaw Beast vs Stormer

Just when the Heroes thought all they needed was bug repellant, out comes the fearsome Jaw Beast! This looks like a job for the leader of the team! Who will win? (probably Jaw Beast) This is set #44016 with 49 pieces.
About this creation
While we're looking at the parts, lets not mess around here. We all know why we love this selection of parts;

TRANSLUCENT BONES!!! ERMAHGERD!!! That's right, we get four trans-blue three-long lower limb pieces. Whilst these pieces themselves are rather useless in terms of MOCmaking, it seems to hint future releases of more translucent pieces like this. And every MOCcist seems to love translucent stuff (me included), so that's exciting.

Right, now we got the informalities out of the way, lets see what other pieces we get in this set:
2 black regular lower limb pieces
2 grey regular upper limb pieces
1 narrow shouldered torso piece
4 aqua single socket pieces
2 black small "beast" feet pieces
1 grey three-long liftarm with a balljoint in the middle
1 grey four-long lower limb piece

For armour we get:
4 sise-three armour pieces in black
1 printed sise-four armour piece in black
1 black torso armour piece

Other parts include:
2 jaw pieces (Upper half in purple, lower half in black)
3 black beast spike pieces
7 purple tooth pieces
A few small technic/system pieces

We also get the parts to build a Stormer Minifig. You can see my Evo Walker Review to see what I think of the figs in general.

He is armed with a Datapad (thank you Commander Spencer for the name) and a spear. It seems kind of strange that he's carrying a spear. I mean, aren't the heroes supposed to be armed with the best weapons and tech that the Hero Factory has to offer? Seems a little primitive. Maybe he just picked it up lying around in the streets. Though, it seems wierd that a spear would be randomly lying around on the street. I know people like to have weapons on display in their houses, like a couple of my friends do, but how'd it get on the street? Probably thinking too much about that.

The Stormer Minifig has to be my favorite. Stormer really works well with that bulky feel that the chest piece gives him, in a way that some of the normally skinnier characters don't. The helmet is the best of the lot, too. Most of them have to be rounded to fit on a minifig's head, and some of them (like Rocka and Evo) get really distorted by this. Stormer looks perfect with that rounded head. Also, the lack of detail in Stormer's original helmet means the designers didn't have to cram all that little detail into that small head, making Stormer's head look almost exactly like his large action figure head. I really like this one.

But will all that epicness be enough to stop...

...him?

RRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!
(Man, I feel like an eight year old again)

So this is Jaw Beast. One of the really nice things about this line is that small sets like this still feel really massive and impressive compared to the tiny minifigs.

Yeah, when we got the names for the sets without seeing the pictures, I was kinda expecting Jaw beast to be a really short but bulky set (Toxic Reapa kind of proportions) with a huge head, like, one which made up the entire torso. That's not what we got. However, it still looks cool. I guess the idea was to give him the normal head and a tiny body, to make the head look large, but he still doesn't look like a "Jaw" beast.

Tell you what, consider it like this; Considering whilst the other beasts fight with their claws and improvised weapons, Jaw Beast attacks the heroes with... his Jaw. I dunno. Maybe "Jaw Beast" was not the best name for him. Maybe something like 'Crawler Beast' or something would have been better.

That aside, I do really like the heads on these beasts. It is kinda blank, but I think that looks kinda nice, and it's not exclusive to that character. Kinda like a Rahkshi head, in the way you could put it on a MOC and it doesn't look like that particular Rahkshi. You can turn the head upside down, and turn it's overbite into an underbite, which creates an almost completely different look to it. They are rather large and do look pretty fearsome. Just a general fan of how this looks.

The Jaw is ratcheted, meaning you can only get three real settings: 1.Normal, 2."Rah", 3."AH MUNNA EACHOO!"
Would have been more expressive as a ball and cup joint, but hey, it works.

Though it does kind of kill it when you can see a massive hole in the back of his head when he opens it up. Though that was done I guess to get the full range of motion. So hey, what're you gonna do?

He can kinda eat a minifigure. He can't completely encase him in his jaw, but he can hold him there, and it does look like he's eating him a bit. I'm not complaining though, it looks good enough, though if they did make Jaw Beast's head massive, it would have made a nice feature. Oh well.

These feet look quite nice, they look quite similar to Bohrok feet, but these are better for this set, because:
a) the joints are stiffer.
b) these look more organic, which is better for this line of characters.

They do have a little trouble standing up though, but they do stand; you just have to be a little more considerate when standing this guy up.

The chest piece is a little awkward. I don't like printed pieces that much, they kind of make MOCcing a little harder. (Almost all of my black sise 5 armour pieces are printed, Which is annoying , because they'd be great for MOCcing.) This one is kind of non-specific to a character (I hated the ones that said the name of the character on them, damn they were a pain)
The fact we only get one of them makes things difficult in terms of MOCcing, too.

On this set, the armour piece also clashes with the head, meaning that this is the lowest it'll go. if you turn the armour piece upside down, it kind of improves the situation, but not by much. This suggests that Jaw Beast is not meant to be upright...

...and rather more like this, which I can deal with. It's a shame we don't get the option though.

Finally, I like the colour scheme of this guy. Aqua, purple and black is such a nice colour scheme, and considering these colours are only hinted at, we only get a few aqua and purple pieces, is quite nice.

I like this set a lot. Something small and simple, but you do get a lot for what you pay for. I give it a thumbs up.

Good luck Stormer... You're gonna need it. I'm going to rate this set in three different catogories; Toy value (how good it is to play with and pose ect.), Design Value (The design, including the colour scheme and how it was built) and Moccist Value (The amount of good pieces).
This is how this set turns out;

Toy Value: 3/5 (Nothing very special for this line's standards, but It's not bad, especially for such a small set.)

Design Value: 3/5 (Kind of basic, but that colour choice is perfect. I just wish they'd focused on the "Jaw" part of this set, considering this is the Jaw Beast.)

Moccist Value: 4/5 (Purple and Aqua. Moccist's will be all over this thing.)

Total score: 10/15

Comments: I like all of the Beasts this time around, but this one is especially nice. It might even be the nicest one so far. It's a nice small set, and a good one to get multiples of. It's not brilliant, but personally I like it.

Quoting X ~ @Werty MEDIUM AZURE. Not Aqua. Anyway that armor is supposed to come out in two summer sets. Crystal Beast and Queen Beast. ;)
It's a very light blue. Happy? :P It's good to hear that that's coming our way. Also, on a side note, Can anyone else figgure out Queen Beast's colour scheme? I mean, I see the... Medium Azure... in there, and black, and a little yellow. I swear I can see green too, but I don't know whether I'm confusing that with the yellow.

Quoting Legobob 29 As always an excellent review! Might pick this one up for the purple and those trans bones. Dunno what I'll use them for (if anything) but I need them in my hand haha. :)
Yeah. Most of the purple and aqua pieces are kind of useless on their own, but we MOCcists just want to have a piece in such a special colour :3

Quoting Stormjay Rider WHY NO PURPLE AND AQUA ARMOR THO?
Yeah, I know, that's a shame. We have had a lot of purple armour in the past though, we can only hope it gets carried on in future, and that aqua armour comes in at some point.

Quoting X ~ Thanks for the review Werty! He is definitely my favorite beast out of him and Flyer Beast...because comparing Spiltter Beast here would be unfair. It could be the GLORIOUS color scheme or even dem translucent bones tho. Anyway nice review! I could have to pickup two or three of these guys. :)
Glad you like it. Yeah, definately challanging Splitter Beast for that #1 spot in the Beast sets.
