Formula Blacktron
A simple build inspired by a '70s classic.
About this creation

Any resemblance to Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus 72 is entirely coincidental...

Twist the driver's head to steer it (not my idea but it's a good one - thankyou Mortalswordsman) and a working V8 that chatters away when you push it along.

Inspired by set 392 from 1977, a classic pile of blue plates with a yellow engine (!)

The Blacktron colour scheme with some working features just felt like the right thing to do.

P.S. I've never been his biggest fan, but right now I wish Michael Schumacher all the luck in the world.

Why did I miss this masterpiece? Excellent design and style, not only because of the Blacktron. I especially like the engine.

Great work Nick. A brilliant mash up of classic Blacktron, classic racing and of course your classic studded style. Classic! ;). Thanks for the shout out. Hope you are well.

For years I thought that John Player was a man who designed special racing cars. Then again I thought that Fray Bentos was the name of the chef on the tinned pies until I looked at a map of Argentina properly 5 years ago. A lovely 70s F1 car, complete with 70s studded goodness :)

Take a classic set, make it better in every way. Great colourscheme (naturally) and technic functions! Now how about a Classic Space Grand Prix?

@chris P; well, building a car and not doing so would be pointless...says the guy that makes most stuff on LDD.

Great! 392 was one of the first sets I got as an AFOL - I always wanted it when I was a child.

Fine revival of the old 392 set, and it still remains true to the past style, though the functionality is upgraded. Lovely model.

Haha! Way cool. Great upgrade and style change from the original. Always so cool to see a top builder use an old not so great Legoset as inspiration now and again and make a winner. Just makes for a fun build.

Super cool! I had a John Player Special matchbox car that this reminds me of awesome! I guess that's what you meant by a 70s classic :-) I like the way you made the helmet too. Great job Nick!

Great design; my first thought was indeed 392 blue formula one. Despite the comments I think steering by head is ultra modern and the future way of controlling your car!:-).

  January 4, 2014
Awesome! I like how you upgraded from the old blue one just a tiny little bit, enough to still make it look like it's LEGO's first ever try at a racecar (not that that's a bad thing ;).

Ha! Never realized the John Player Special paint scheme was actually Blacktron. Utterly brilliant build. Was always more of a Mika fan but without Schumacher, their battles wouldn't have been so spectacular. I wish him all the best as well. Excellent!

he, he, nice formula, the color scheme looks great on it, I like the comparison with the old set.

Nice work Nick! I've also got a few classic space builds coming up, so I can especially relate to the color schemes. I've never watched Formula 1, but I do have a lot of respect for Schumacher, and just like you, hope gets through this just fine....

Marvellous stuff - very retro (and wonderfully playable too). I'm not Schumi's biggest fan either, but having gone through the same thing over the summer I feel a certain affiliation now. Sadly the outcome is random - no-one will know how he's going to be for a while yet. I'm still learning myself. Anyways, 5/5 - simple but awesome : )
